The last time Ciara attended the Met Gala was in 2022 when she wore a gown boasting over 300,000 sequins
Ciara turned heads in a daring cut-out dress on the 2025 Met Gala red carpet.
On May 5, the singer, 39, brought her signature glam to the red carpet in a black and silver gown by LaQuan Smith. The ensemble consisted of strings of crystals that hung across the center of the bodice and down the sides of her legs. The rest of the gown was a structured black satin and featured a train.
The singer added black pumps and wore her short blonde hair in a sleek style.
Ciara attended the event with her husband, Russell Wilson, who opted for a black tuxedo and a black coat draped over his shoulders. The Giants quarterback’s topped off the look with a crystal brooch, a cane and sunglasses.

“I’ve always been inspired by the essence of Harlem Renaissance and this jazzy era,” Smith tells PEOPLE exclusively, noting that art deco design also served as a reference point for Ciara’s look.
“For me, sharp tailoring and an exaggerated shoulder is what I’ve always been incorporating in my collections,” the designer added. “I love the ’80s as well, and the fearlessness of Josephine Baker, so I think that you’re going to be able to get some of the essence of all of those notes through the design.”

Smith, who also dressed Halle Berry for her return to the Met Gala after a seven-year hiatus, revealed that their combined looks took three months and over 2,000 hours to bring to life.
In October 2024, Vogue announced Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams and Anna Wintour as co-chairs of the 2025 Met Gala, along with LeBron James as honorary chair. The gala also has a star-studded host committee: Simone Biles and her husband, Jonathan Owens, as well as Doechii, Regina King, Spike Lee, Angel Reese and Usher.
Held the first Monday in May at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the event fundraises for The Costume Institute and spotlights the museum’s spring 2025 exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” — also the theme for the gala.
According to Curator in Charge Andrew Bolton, the exhibit, which is inspired by guest curator Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, explores “the Black dandy as both a concept and an identity signifier.”
The exhibit “presents a cultural and historical examination of Black style from the 18th century to the present through an exploration of the concept of dandyism,” according to a post on the museum’s Instagram.
The Met Gala’s dress code — which is not the same as the theme — is “Tailored for You.” Fittingly, it is a nod to the exhibition’s focus on menswear and suiting.

Ciara has a long history of glamorous Met Gala moments.
She made her debut in 2006 in a simple champagne-colored gown, but over the past decade, the “Level Up” singer’s looks have gotten bolder, from naked glamour for the year of “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” to the goddess warrior vibes she served for “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty.”
She made a statement in 2019 with her skin-baring emerald green gown by Dundas and massive headpiece by House of Malakai.
In 2021, she channeled the “American Independence” dress code in a sporty neon green sequined long-sleeve gown with cutout details and dramatic shoulder pads. The Dundas look bore her husband’s Seattle Seahawks jersey number, 3. She completed the sporty look by wearing Wilson’s Super Bowl ring and holding a football-shaped purse.
While chatting with that year’s Vogue correspondent Keke Palmer, Ciara talked about working with Dundas on a Met Gala look for the third time. “Fashion is a big part of how I express myself, when you look at old photos and be like, ‘What was I thinking?’ But we have to continuously express ourselves and challenge ourselves.”

At the 2022 Met Gala, Ciara shone in a silver-print one-shoulder, high-slit Michael Kors Collection gown with silver Jimmy Choo heels and a glittering headpiece.
She tapped into the “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” theme with her gown that boasted close to 350,000 sequins.

That year, her glam pros took PEOPLE behind the scenes on how they did her hair and makeup for the big night.
Makeup artist Yolonda Frederick said that the outfit is always her first source of inspiration. “For me, the creative direction begins from the designer’s point of view. Considering this, I decided to live in that realm but maximize the moment with both silver and graphic elements incorporated into the makeup,” she added of what particularly influenced the products she used for Ciara’s look.
As for her mega-long tresses, hair expert Cesar DeLeön Ramîrez wanted to channel the “opulence and luxury” of the Gilded Age. And he did so with 40-inch extensions.
