Cedric the Entertainer and Max Greenfield will return as everyone’s favorite TV neighbors one last time.
Variety confirmed in March 2025 that the beloved sitcom The Neighborhood had been renewed for its eighth season — and announced that it would be its last.
“The brilliant cast and creative team at The Neighborhood, led by the incomparable Cedric the Entertainer, have brought levity, laughter and poignant storylines to Monday nights for seven incredible seasons,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment, adding that the show was a strong performer for the network.
She continued, “We believe the show’s loyal fans deserve a proper farewell season full of the trademark humor and heartfelt moments that are synonymous with the series.”
The Neighborhood, which aired its two-part season 7 finale on May 5, premiered in 2018 and follows friendly Midwesterner Dave Johnson (Greenfield) as he moves his white family into a predominantly Black neighborhood in Los Angeles.
The comedy series tackles issues of race and class with humor and heart, as the Johnsons navigate their new community while trying to fit in with their skeptical next-door neighbor, Calvin Butler (Cedric).

Greenfield opened up to Salon in 2023 about what part of his work on The Neighborhood he’s most proud of.
“What I think the show does really beautifully is it doesn’t provide answers,” the actor said. “It just allows these characters to communicate and live next to each other. More times than not in a really fun way, which I think is, to me, is the really great part about the show is that it doesn’t ever get too heavy.”

There is one spinoff of The Neighborhood in the works. Tracy Morgan, who played Calvin’s wealthy brother Curtis in season 4, will star in the Paramount+ offshoot Crutch — but he’s not reprising his role.
Instead, the Saturday Night Live alum will play Francois “Frank” Crutchfield, Calvin’s cousin, who has to pause his empty nest plans when his adult children unexpectedly return home.
Cedric told TVLine in April 2025 that he, Greenfield and Arnold (who plays his wife, Tina Butler, in The Neighborhood) will guest star in Crutch’s pilot season, which he teased will air “some time in the fall.”
Deadline reported in January 2025 that a spinoff following Malcolm Butler (McKinney) and Marty Butler (Spears) as they leave their parents’ home to move to Venice Beach was also in the works. But CBS passed on the series, per TVLine.
The pilot for the untitled series aired as the second half of The Neighborhood’s season 7 finale on May 5 and gave viewers a glimpse at what the show would have been about. In addition to McKinney and Spears reprising their roles, the cast also would have included Justin Long and Kara Royster.
Cedric told TVLine that he was “disappointed” by the news that the series wouldn’t move forward. “I want everybody to write in [to CBS], because I think people are going to see this season finale and be, like, ‘That’s a great show! Y’all should do that show!’ ” he said.
