A sequel to Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and James Franco’s cult crime thriller Spring Breakers is in the works.
On Wednesday, May 14, Variety reported that the producers of the original 2012 movie are developing a sequel titled Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain, which will star Bella Thorne and will see director Matthew Bright (Freeway) take over from Harmony Korine, who directed the original.
Thorne, 27, will star in the film alongside Ariel Martin, Grace Van Dien and True Whitaker, as a new group of young women who embark on a spring break to remember. A synopsis for the movie that Variety obtained described the sequel as “a bold new ride for Gen Z.”
“When their trip explodes out of control, they’re forced to outrun the chaos they’ve created,” the synopsis reads.

Spring Breakers, which also starred Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine, centered on a group of college students who rob a restaurant in the hopes of using the stolen money to party during spring break in Florida. When all four women are arrested for drug use, they are bailed out by a local drug dealer named Alien (Franco) and quickly become embroiled in Alien’s turf wars with other gang members in the area.

Gomez has spoken about the movie’s impact on her career as recently as a November 2024 interview with Elle, in which she cited Spring Breakers as her “most challenging” role because it came so soon after she finished starring on Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place.
“It was the first thing I did right after my Disney show and it was such a crazy detour,” she said at the time. “That’s when I knew I was going to fall in love with filmmakers and really gritty, fun stuff that was a little too graphic.”
