Sheinelle Jones, co-host of ‘Today,’ has lost her beloved grandmother Josephine Brown at 96, just months after her husband Uche Ojeh’s death — a double blow that underscores the fragility of life and the enduring power of legacy.

Sheinelle Jones, the newly promoted co-anchor of NBC’s “Today” show, has shared the heartbreaking news of her grandmother Josephine Vonceal Pace Brown’s passing. The 96-year-old passed away on New Year’s Eve, just months after the death of her husband, Uche Ojeh, who died in May from brain cancer. In a deeply personal Instagram post, Jones described her grandmother as “my world,” her “best buddy,” and her “unapologetic cheerleader.”

“It is with the heaviest heart that I announce the sudden passing of my grandmother,” Jones wrote. “She passed early in the morning on New Year’s Eve at the age of 96. Anyone who knows me, knows that ‘Grandmama,’ Josephine Vonceal Pace Brown, was my world; my best buddy, my confidante and my unapologetic cheerleader.”

Her tribute, which included a carousel of cherished photos, emphasized how Josephine’s unwavering belief in her shaped her path — from education to journalism. “Her standard of excellence was extremely high—but I was fueled by her belief in me and constant affirmation when she saw me put in the work,” Jones noted. “What makes our relationship extra special—is the fact that she was so attentive, beyond the backdrop of a highly successful life of her own.”

Josephine was a pioneering figure in her community. Before Jones was born, she became the first Black woman elected to her local board of education — a trailblazer known for her “tough” stance on equity. “Her mission—to make education equitable for all children,” Jones recalled.

Her influence extended beyond education. Josephine was a gifted pianist and director of the music ministry at her church, where she founded the choir A.R.I.S.E. — African Americans Renewing Interest in Spiritals, Ensemble — 37 years ago. “I grew up listening to traditional Spirituals… songs passed down from our ancestors… they sang of struggle, love, faith, resilience and triumph. Those hymns are embedded in my DNA,” Jones shared. “To this day, that choir continues to perform… they’ve been everywhere over the last year, from Paris to Washington DC.”

Sheinelle also honored her family’s legacy of excellence, noting that her grandfather and his father were among the first Black doctors in their town. “Between the two of them, they exemplified what it means to squeeze the most out of life and to give,” she wrote.

In her final message, Jones reflected on the profound impact of her grandmother’s passing. “Life is so precious, and I can’t help but to be changed by the last year and a half. Heaven has gained a new choir director, and our family — a new angel,” she said, adding, “She used to play Lou Rawls when I was little, I would giggle as she sang along; this song is for her. 🥹🎶🎶.”

The outpouring of support from fans was immediate. Comments on her Instagram post were filled with condolences and prayers, with many praising Josephine’s legacy. “She was an AMAZING woman. I am so very sorry for your loss💔,” one follower wrote. Another added, “It is easy to see where your beautiful light comes from! Condolences to you and your family. You surely have two beautiful angels. ❤️.”

For fans of “Today,” this news comes at a poignant time. Jones, who joined Jenna Bush Hager as the new permanent co-host of the show’s third hour, has already faced a whirlwind of personal and professional milestones — including her emotional final day hosting the third hour — all while navigating grief. Her grandmother’s passing, just months after her husband’s, adds a layer of sorrow to a year already marked by loss.

Josephine’s life was one of quiet strength and profound impact. She was not only a matriarch but a force for change — in education, in music, and in community. Her legacy lives on through her granddaughter, who continues to carry her values forward. “She taught me that excellence is not just about achievement, but about the people you uplift along the way,” Jones wrote, encapsulating the essence of her grandmother’s enduring influence.

As the entertainment world mourns the loss of another pillar of legacy, Sheinelle Jones stands as a testament to the power of resilience, love, and the enduring bond between generations. Her grandmother’s voice may be silenced, but her spirit continues to echo through every note of the choir, every word of encouragement, and every story she told.
