The Disney+ hit ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ isn’t just bringing a fan-favorite character to life in Season 2; it’s revolutionizing visual effects. Actor Daniel Diemer’s performance as the gentle giant cyclops Tyson is powered by groundbreaking new technology from Industrial Light & Magic that merges both of his eyes into one, capturing every ounce of emotion without traditional motion capture markers.

When bringing a mythological figure to the screen, the challenge is always the same: how do you make the fantastic feel real? For Season 2 of the celebrated Disney+ series ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians,’ the answer came through a technological breakthrough that gives the cyclops Tyson a soulfulness never seen before.

Actor Daniel Diemer, the 6-foot-5-inch star tasked with embodying Percy’s half-brother, is at the center of this innovation. The show’s creators, along with the legendary visual effects house Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), developed a completely new approach to create Tyson’s single, expressive eye, ensuring the character’s heart shines through the monster’s facade.

The Ocular Revolution by ILM

Forget the cumbersome tracking markers and dots typically associated with performance capture. ILM’s pioneering solution for Tyson is far more elegant and effective. The technology involved scanning both of Diemer’s eyes “thousands and thousands” of times, digitally combining them into a single, seamless CGI eye.

“They’re taking that eye straight from me,” Diemer, 29, explained. “This technology uses both my eyes and combines them into one.”

This method allows Diemer to simply act. Every subtle glance, every flicker of emotion, every moment of fear or joy is captured directly from his natural performance and transposed onto Tyson’s face. The result is a level of emotional nuance rarely seen in a fully CGI character element.

“No one’s ever done it like this before,” confirmed executive producer Jonathan E. Steinberg. “This solution brings an emotional performance from (Diemer’s) two eyes. There are a million cues you’re getting from someone’s eyes, all happening in one eye here.”

Executive producer James Bobin, who directed the first two episodes of the season, emphasized that this fusion of performance and tech is the key to connecting with the character. “The empathy for Tyson is from Daniel and the ILM team,” he stated.

A Role He Was Born to Play

It seems the Fates themselves conspired to cast Diemer as Tyson. Both the cyclops and Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell) are sons of the Greek god Poseidon, a detail straight from the mythology found in texts like Homer’s Odyssey. This connection is one Diemer has personally cherished for years.

The actor revealed a lifelong obsession with the sea god, proudly displaying a trident necklace he’s worn for years. “The Greek gods and mythology have been a huge part of my life for so long, and I’ve loved the ‘Percy Jackson’ books since I was 13,” Diemer shared. His passion is so deep, he even named his production company Poseidon Entertainment.

His physical presence and previous acting experience, such as playing a gentle, clumsy football player in Netflix’s “The Half of It,” also prepared him for Tyson’s kind-hearted yet lumbering nature. “With one eye, the depth perception is going to be off, so I’m going to move more carefully,” Diemer noted, explaining his process. “It’s a fine line to honor the monster with this physicality and also not make it comedic.”

More Than Just a Monster

In the world of demigods, Tyson is an outsider. Cyclopes are feared, and monsters are forbidden from the sanctuary of Camp Half-Blood. This creates immediate tension, particularly with Annabeth Chase (Leah Sava Jeffries), whose character carries deep-seated trauma related to his kind.

However, Season 2 of ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ promises to peel back the layers of Tyson’s story. The series will delve into his past as a homeless orphan, exploring the “dark years” he spent surviving on the streets without a family to protect him.

“The series brings that story to the surface more,” said Diemer. “The book talks about scars, and we show them. By series end, you’ll see what he needed to do to survive, and how his loving protectiveness came to be.” This exploration will provide crucial context for his unwavering loyalty to Percy, transforming him from a simple protector into a character defined by resilience and love.

This combination of a perfectly cast actor, a deep respect for the source material, and revolutionary visual effects is setting a new standard for fantasy television. By focusing on the emotion within the eye of the monster, the series ensures that Tyson will be remembered not for his appearance, but for his immense heart.
