A country superstar was brought to tears during an emotional performance of a deeply personal song. Though visibly overcome, he pushed through and later revealed why he rarely performs the song live. The heartfelt moment left fans in awe as he opened up about the powerful story behind the lyrics.
Luke Combs held audience members enthralled as he and his band performed at the Newport Folk Festival the weekend of July 25, 2025. During his set, he decided to perform a song he rarely sings live, and for good reason.
Per The Boot, the country superstar’s band began the 2024 tune, “Fathers & Sons.” It is about his relationship with his sons, Tex and Beau.
He began the song, but midway through, broke down, holding his head in his hands as his tears flowed. In a clip shared to TikTok, the crowd’s cheers convinced the hitmaker to continue on.

After continuing to struggle through the song, Combs confessed his feelings to the audience. “I remember why we don’t play that one much,” he admitted.
TikTok users flooded the platform with reactions to the onstage moment. They praised Combs’ heartfelt love for his sons and admired the raw emotion he showed while singing the song.
“Seeing Luke being emotional reminded me of how much I love his Fathers and Sons album. As someone who’s lost their own dad, an album like this means a lot to me, and the songs are very healing to listen to,” one fan wrote.
“Song makes me cry too Luke lol. Don’t apologize,” penned a second admirer.
A third social media user noted, “The reason his music is so good. He feels all what he sings the same way.”
A fourth claimed, “What a true man! So good to see him being upset as he’s family means so much to him! Showing pure emotion!”
Luke Combs is currently on his Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old Tour. He told PEOPLE Magazine that he’s only performing at festivals this year to spend more time with his family.
“We got 20-something shows this year. I’ve already done 10 of them. I got 14 more shows for the rest of the whole year. I want to be home with my kids. I want to see my kids grow up, and I want them to know that they’re important to me.”
