Bruce Springsteen may be launching a weeks-long tour across Europe, but he won’t let the “dangerous times” he sees brewing back home go unnoticed.
The rock and roller addressed his opening night crowd in Manchester, England on Wednesday, May 14, to highlight the “treasonous” actions happening in Washington and call for “freedom [to] ring.”
“The mighty E Street Band is here tonight to call upon the righteous power of art, of music, of rock ‘n roll in dangerous times,” he said, per Variety. “In my home, the America I love, the America I’ve written about, that has been a beacon of hope and liberty for 250 years, is currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous administration.”
He added, “Tonight we ask all who believe in democracy and the best of our American experiment to rise with us, raise your voices against authoritarianism and let freedom ring!”
Springsteen has previously acknowledged that “my opinion’s no more or less important than those of any of my fellow citizens,” which is likely why he only recently began speaking out politically. “But like you, I’ve only got one vote, and it’s one of the most precious possessions that I have,” he continued explained when he officially endorsed Kamala Harris and Tim Walz ahead of the 2024 election.
Following Trump’s win the “Born in the USA” singer performed in Toronto, where he shared “a fighting prayer for my country” with the audience in his 2007 track “Long Walk Home.”
