André 3000’s musical Met Gala look definitely struck a chord with Sherri Shepherd.
During Tuesday’s episode of her eponymous talk show, Shepherd crowned the Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter the winner of “wildest outfit of the night” after he wore a black tuxedo, red hat, and a piano strapped to his back to the star-studded event.
“He wore a piano on his back that matched the cover of the album [7 piano sketches] that he dropped simultaneously,” Shepherd told her audience. “And, first of all, I love the creativity, but I would’ve been mad if one of them piano legs had hit me if I was standing in line.”

The host equated André’s outfit to standing in line at the airport next to someone with a massive backpack. “So if you standing behind him and he gotta back up, you’re getting stabbed multiple times,” she joked. “Andre 3000 said: ‘Forget the flute, I’m gonna bring that whole piano.’”
Still, André’s outfit piqued Shepherd’s curiosity. “When I was looking at it, of course, my mind got to moving,” she noted, “and I said, ‘I wonder what I would look like in a piano.’”
The program then launched into the title card for her recurring fashion segment “Wear It Up or Tear It Up” and, when it cut back to set, the host could be seen with her very own piano strapped to her back.
“Now, André probably paid a fortune for his outfit,” Shepherd said, “but our art director Michael Lee Scott… made my outfit for $9.99.”
The host then put the outfit’s comfortability to the test by strutting across the stage and doing a few twirls while the crowd applauded and cheered her on. She then asked the crowd whether or not the outfit resonated with them, and they appeared to give their stamp of approval.
André explained in an Instagram post last night that his new album is composed of a collection of piano improvisations that were inspired by some of his favorite composers like Thelonious Monk, Stephen Sondheim, and Joni Mitchell.
“These piano pieces weren’t recorded with the intention of presenting them in any formal way to the public. They were personal, at home recordings. I would sometimes text them to my family and friends,” he wrote. “Pardon the sound quality, they were all recorded with my iPhone sitting directly on the piano or my laptop microphone with the exception of ‘Blueberries’. (recorded in studio).”
This isn’t the first time that Shepherd has tried her hand at another celeb’s bold fashion moment. Back in February, her team recreated Jaden Smith’s gothic house headpiece that he wore to the Grammys.
After trying on Smith’s look for herself, Shepherd joked, “I don’t know, but I’m telling you: I’m feeling quite homey in here.”
