Michelle Obama is enjoying real-life moments with her daughters that she didn’t get to experience in her White House-life.
While chatting on Amy Poehler’s podcast, ‘Good Hang With Amy Poehler,’ released on Tuesday, the former First Lady shared a sweet moment where she and daughter Malia enjoyed quintessential mother-daughter bonding time that perhaps they would have had in her teen years — had it not been for White House protocols — instead of her twenties.
“I was driving with Malia, we were in Martha’s Vineyard, I’m driving, she turns on the radio and starts playing some of our favorite songs and we’re singing at the top of our lungs,” she shared. “I realized I’d never had that experience with her.”
Obama explained that although Malia and her youngest daughter, Sasha, learned to drive while their dad, Barack Obama, was president, she couldn’t teach them for security reasons.
“Just the basic bonding moments,” she added. “We didn’t have time alone in a car just with me and my daughter playing the music that we wanted, at the volume that we wanted.”

Fast forward and Malia is 26 and Sasha is 23. The two have mostly stayed out of the spotlight since their days as First Daughters.
And while Michelle has remained in the public eye, she also told Poehler how she enjoys her privacy — especially at their Martha’s Vineyard home.
“I like the islands where we live because…people get used to you, they don’t care, at certain times of the year I can walk into town and just go shopping.”
However she joked, “sometimes I forget how to use my credit card.”
