Zach Gilford recently revealed how he and co-star Jesse Plemons turned Friday Night Lights‘ most controversial storyline—the infamous Season 2 murder plot involving Landry Clarke and Tyra Collette—into an inside joke on set, improvising scenes with unexpected reminders of the crime that kept fans talking for years. His comments highlight the enduring chemistry between the actors and the unique production environment of the beloved series.

For fans of Friday Night Lights, few storylines spark as much debate and head-scratching as the Season 2 murder plot. In a recent interview on the Pod Meets World podcast, actor Zach Gilford, who famously portrayed quarterback Matt Saracen, peeled back the curtain on how he and co-star Jesse Plemons (Landry Clarke) found humor in the show’s most infamous narrative decision.

Gilford’s candid reflections offer a fascinating glimpse into the creative process of the beloved NBC football drama, which captivated audiences from 2006 to 2011. His stories not only validate long-held fan sentiments about the plotline but also underscore the incredible rapport shared by the cast, particularly between Gilford and Plemons.

The Unexpected Journey to Dillon: Zach Gilford’s Casting as Matt Saracen

Before becoming the introverted but resilient Matt Saracen, Gilford initially auditioned for Taylor Kitsch’s role as Tim Riggins. However, the casting directors saw something different in him, shifting him to the part of the young quarterback thrust into leadership. Gilford also revealed a fascinating behind-the-scenes detail: he was cast just days before shooting began because the initial actor booked for Matt Saracen was already committed to a Disney TV movie. This last-minute change set the stage for an iconic performance that resonated deeply with fans.

Reflecting on the show’s lasting appeal, Gilford expressed his excitement at how well it holds up. “A couple of years ago, for the first time ever I went back and watched some of the show,” Gilford shared. “And I was really not surprised, but excited how well it held up.” His rewatch also deepened his appreciation for his co-stars, particularly Adrianne Palicki, who brought immense depth to Tyra Collette.

The Murder Plotline: A Creative Stretch That Almost Didn’t Happen

The controversial Season 2 plot saw Landry Fields (Jesse Plemons) kill a man who attempted to assault Tyra Collette (Adrianne Palicki). In a panicked attempt to cover it up, Landry and Tyra dumped the body in a river. This storyline proved to be a significant departure from the grounded realism that defined much of Friday Night Lights.

Gilford himself admitted his reservations from the start, recalling a conversation with producer Sarah Aubrey during Season 1. “I remember reading it and talking to Sarah Aubrey, one of our producers, and I wasn’t involved in it. I was like, ‘This seems like a bit of a stretch,’ ” he stated. Aubrey conceded it was a “stretch” but explained that the writers wanted to find more ways to connect Tyra and Landry, who had developed a strong bond. Initially filmed for the Season 1 finale, the plot was cut, much to Gilford’s relief. However, it was later revived for Season 2.

Selling the Absurd: The Actors’ Uncanny Talent

Despite the plot’s perceived implausibility, Gilford had high praise for his co-stars. “Only a future Oscar-nominated actor and Adrianne could pull off this plotline because the whole time I’m watching it, I’m like, ‘This storyline is so bad, but they’re so good at acting it,’ ” he shared, referring to Plemons’ later accolades. The actors’ ability to infuse genuine emotion and stakes into such an outlandish situation is a testament to their talent and dedication.

The storyline eventually faded, with the show dropping the plot entirely by Season 3, never to revisit or mention it again. This creative decision resonated with many fans who found the plot jarringly out of place within the otherwise realistic world of Dillon, Texas. Gilford quipped, “I think it’s one of the beauties of TV is you can just pretend things didn’t happen.”

Behind-the-Scenes Banter: Improvised Jokes and Enduring Friendship

While the murder plot was a dramatic moment on screen, it became a source of levity behind the scenes. Gilford revealed that he and Plemons would frequently improvise jokes about it during filming for the remainder of the series. “We got to improv a lot,” Gilford recalled to People. “And so often in scenes for the duration of the show, we’d be shooting some scene in the locker room or something, and just out of nowhere be like, ‘Oh, hey. Hey. Wait. Remember when you murdered that guy? That was crazy. Anyway, I’m glad you got away with it. Who are we playing this week?’ “

This playful banter highlights the strong bond between Gilford and Plemons, whose on-screen chemistry as best friends was a cornerstone of the show. Their ability to inject humor into even the most serious moments is a charming aspect of their enduring friendship.

A Reunion in the Cards? Gilford and Plemons’ Enduring Desire to Work Together

The camaraderie between Gilford and Plemons extends beyond nostalgic jokes. Gilford recently expressed his strong desire to reunite with Plemons on screen. “Either one of us would love to work with the other again,” Gilford told Entertainment Weekly, praising Plemons as “such a talented actor.” He noted that their natural rapport on Friday Night Lights made it easy to fall into character, often allowing for extensive improvisation.

The two even attempted to develop an idea together years ago, but busy schedules intervened. Fans would undoubtedly “jump at” the opportunity to see the beloved duo collaborate again, perhaps bringing their unique brand of chemistry to a new project.

Life After Lights: Gilford’s Diverse Career and Enduring Legacy

Since his time as Matt Saracen, Gilford has carved out a diverse career, notably in Mike Flanagan’s horror projects such as Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, and The Fall of the House of Usher. He also recently starred in the film After All and directed an episode of Criminal Minds: Evolution, where he plays the villain Elias Voit, a role that allows him to showcase an unexpected comedic side.

Despite his varied roles, Gilford remains deeply connected to Friday Night Lights. He is honored that fans still approach him about the show, recognizing its special place in people’s lives. “It’s so cool to be associated with something that holds such a special part in people’s lives,” he affirmed. With Peacock reportedly developing a Friday Night Lights reboot, the legacy of Dillon, Texas, and its unforgettable characters like Matt Saracen and Landry Clarke, continues to live on.
