Is Brat punk? Is punk Brat? The answer, if Charli XCX’s 2025 Met Gala look is any indication, seems to be “yes.” Dressed in black from head to toe, Charli brought both vibes to this year’s Met Gala theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”
While her entire ensemble made her look like an ethereal goth fairy, her hair was undeniably the star of the show. Charli complemented her signature long, black waves with spiky, sculptural feathers that evoked Black Swan. Charli XCX’s hairstylist, Matt Benns, breaks down exactly how he achieved the singer’s hairstyle for fashion’s biggest night: “On freshly washed hair, I sprayed and detangled, used a curling cream, and diffused with Wavyalk’s Turblow Pro with the diffuser attachment,” Benns says. After her hair was dry, he added even more definition with the Wavytalk Curlmaker Pro, mixing two different-sized curling iron attachments. From there, he pulled half of her hair up into a twisted bun, which he wanted to feel romantic with a “punky twist.” To create even more dimension, Benn left two pieces out at the front to frame her face.
“It needed to feel really random, not symmetrical,” Benns explained. From there, he added the finishing (and most important) touches: the dramatic black feathers. To make Charli’s look complete, Benn opted for feather ear cuffs, though he even glued some onto her skin to help them “blend in.” Maybe this year, Brat summer just might turn into Black Swan fall.
