Yannick Bright’s New Deal: Inter Miami Secures Midfield Future Amidst Roster Overhaul and DP Slot Speculation
SHARE

Inter Miami has secured a vital piece of its midfield for the long term, extending Yannick Bright’s contract through 2028 with an option for 2029. This strategic move provides stability as the club navigates a significant roster transition, including the impending retirements of Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, which will open two crucial Designated Player slots for the 2026 season and beyond.

Inter Miami CF officially announced the contract extension of midfielder Yannick Bright, securing his services through the 2028 MLS season, with an additional club option for 2029. The 24-year-old Italian native has quickly become an indispensable component of the Herons’ midfield since joining the club as a first-round selection in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft.

This extension signifies the club’s commitment to building a sustainable future around promising young talent, complementing their star-studded roster. Bright’s deal follows closely on the heels of another major contract finalized less than a week prior: Lionel Messi’s three-year extension through the 2028 season, as reported by the Associated Press.

Bright’s Journey: From College Star to MLS Midfield Engine

Bright’s ascent within Major League Soccer has been rapid and impressive. In just his second season with Inter Miami, he has made 68 appearances across all competitions, contributing 1 goal and 2 assists. His ability to seamlessly integrate into the team’s playing style, often partnering with seasoned veterans like Sergio Busquets, has made him a crucial link in the midfield under both previous head coach Gerardo Martino and current manager Javier Mascherano.

Before making his mark in MLS, Bright honed his skills in college soccer, starring for the University of New Hampshire. His collegiate career saw him tally 2 goals and 8 assists, earning numerous accolades including:

  • First Team All-American
  • Mac Hermann Trophy Semifinalist
  • America East Midfielder of the Year

Prior to his time in the United States, Bright also gained professional experience with Arconatese in Italy, making 20 appearances for the club. This diverse background has clearly prepared him for the demands of MLS, where he has already appeared in 27 matches this season, starting 16, and played a significant role in Miami’s 2024 Supporters’ Shield win, a season where the team set an MLS single-season points record of 74.

Inter Miami’s Evolving Roster and the DP Conundrum

While Bright’s extension provides stability, it also highlights the significant changes coming to Inter Miami’s roster. The winter transfer window will usher in a new era, as two pivotal figures, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, are set to retire following the conclusion of the 2025 MLS campaign. Their departure will leave the club with two open Designated Player (DP) slots for the upcoming 2026 season.

Currently, Lionel Messi occupies one of the three available DP spots, and will continue to do so through the 2028 season. The club is also expected to exercise the option in midfielder Rodrigo de Paul’s contract, likely elevating him to DP status to retain his services.

This leaves one Designated Player slot wide open, a tantalizing prospect for co-owner Jorge Mas and the Inter Miami front office to fill. Fan communities are already buzzing with speculation about potential high-profile signings that could join Messi and de Paul in 2026.

The Uncertain Future of Luis Suárez

Adding another layer of intrigue to Miami’s offseason plans is the unresolved status of forward Luis Suárez. His contract is set to expire at the end of 2025. While his future with the club remains unknown, reports indicate that an offer has been extended to the Uruguayan veteran for the upcoming season.

Jorge Mas, in an interview earlier in June, acknowledged the immense contributions of the departing legends and hinted at future roster flexibility. “He [Busquets] and Suárez have been a super plus to this team. The door is always open to them. By the fall, we’ll all have to make decisions about what the 2026 roster looks like,” Mas told ESPN. This sentiment suggests that while changes are inevitable, the club maintains a respectful approach to its celebrated players.

As the team continues its current playoff run, leading Nashville SC 1-0 in their round one playoff series, the front office is undoubtedly strategizing for an ambitious 2026 season. The extension of Yannick Bright is a clear statement of intent, building a foundation of reliable talent to support future endeavors and high-profile additions.
