The “Wings of Fire” animated series at Amazon Prime Video has found its showrunner.

Variety has learned exclusively that Aaron Waltke has boarded the show as showrunner, executive producer, and co-writer. Tui T. Sutherland, who wrote the books on which the series is based, will also co-write and executive produce. Marc Resteghini will also executive produce under his Jack Tar Productions banner.

The show was first reported to be in development at Amazon back in February 2024 after a previous version with a different creative team was scrapped at Netflix.

Waltke is no stranger to the world of animation. He is perhaps best known His previous work includes Guillermo Del Toro’s “Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia” at Netflix, for which he won a Daytime Emmy for best writing for an animated series in 2018. He was nominated for the show in the same category the following year. Waltke also served as showrunner on the spinoff series “Wizards: Tales of Arcadia,” which was nominated for the Daytime Emmy for best animated series and won the Kidscreen Award for best new series. Most recently, Waltke was a writer and co-executive producer on the critically-acclaimed series “Star Trek: Prodigy,” the first show in the “Star Trek” franchise geared towards kids.

Waltke is repped by UTA, Range Media Partners, and Lichter Grossman.

There are 15 books in the main “Wings of Fire” novel collection, with multiple supplementary books and a graphic novel version. First published by Scholastic in 2012, the books have sold over 27 million copies across the world and have been on the New York Times best seller list for over 240 weeks.

The official logline of the show states that it “tells the tales of seven dragon tribes who have been at war for generations over an ancient, lost treasure. A secret movement called the Talons of Peace is determined to bring an end to the fighting, with the help of a prophecy — a foretelling that calls for great sacrifice. Five dragonets are collected to fulfill the prophecy, raised in a hidden cave and enlisted, against their will, to end the terrible war.”

Resteghini was previously the head of series development at Amazon MGM Studios (then Amazon Studios), but left the company in 2022 amid restructuring. He first joined Amazon in 2014 and developed and launched shows like “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Jack Ryan,” and “The Underground Railroad” during his tenure. He recently executive produced the upcoming Amazon series “Young Sherlock” and is developing “The Girl in the Lake” with Scarlett Johansson at United Artists.
