NEED TO KNOW

  • Vera Wang opened up about celebrating her age in an interview with PEOPLE before her 76th birthday

  • Known for her lavish birthday get-togethers, the fashion designer hosted a chic Parisian brunch on June 27, despite almost capping her celebrations at age 75

  • “You have to celebrate every year that you’re alive,” she tells PEOPLE

The celebrating doesn’t stop for Vera Wang.

Over the years, the fashion designer has become synonymous with ultra-stylish birthday festivities, from her past rosé-themed soirée to her rat-pack-inspired bash.

However, ahead of turning 76 on June 27, she had reservations about throwing herself another party. Why? “After my 75th last year, I said, ‘Maybe, you don’t have to celebrate after 75.'” she tells PEOPLE while speaking about the latest in her fragrance line.

“A lot of my friends don’t want to. They say, ‘I’m too old.’ I said, ‘It’s not about being old. It’s about being here and living, and we should celebrate that,'” she continues, adding: “But you have to celebrate every year that you’re alive. That’s just how I feel.”

This year, Wang hosted a stylish evening at the restaurant Le Relais Plaza in Paris, pictures of which she posted to Instagram alongside other snapshots of her and loved ones gathered around a decorated tablescape. She also shared a sweet photo of her blowing out the “76” candle topping her chic butter yellow cake.

For the occasion she wore a black scoop-neck minidress, knee-high boots and a gold bedazzled temporary tattoo on her arm to commemorate her age.

Wang emphasizes that getting glam is a part of the fun. Much like how she views any big red carpet spectacle, such as the Met Gala or the Oscars, she treats her birthday like her own fashion show. “It’s just my way of bringing fashion into my personal life.”

With her birthday behind her, now Wang is focused on getting to work this summer’s bridal season, which will require fitting 30 brides and being a guest at a few weddings, including some being hosted by her daughters’ friends. “When you have daughters, they become your consultants on their friends’ wedding gowns. Trust me,” says Wang, who is mom to Cecilia and Josephine, both in their 30s.

Retirement doesn’t seem to be in Wang’s near future anyhow. Despite her selling her brand to WHP Global last December, she is still the founder and chief creative officer of her brand and is very much involved in her partnerships, including those with Jared Jewelers and Zales.

As she told PEOPLE in 2024: “I think maybe a little bit like Warren Buffett [age 93] or Queen Elizabeth II [who ruled the British monarchy for seven decades until she died at age 96], I’m just going to keep prodding on because I feel as though I’m able to do my best work more and more. I’m really trying to respect that in me, that voice in me, that I feel very happy to be creating. That’s what it’s all about, really.”
