The Office was a pop culture juggernaut, so it’s no surprise that NBC (and its stars) have eyed a spinoff series since it wrapped in 2013. (Who else remembers The Farm?)
It took over a decade, but a proper spinoff of the original comedy, which was itself a remake of the beloved U.K. series, will debut later this year. Created by Office showrunner Greg Daniels and Nathan For You co-creator Michael Koman, The Paper is a mockumentary series chronicling the cramped offices of a failing Ohio newspaper called The Truth Teller.
Overseeing The Truth Teller is Harry Potter and Star Wars alum Domhnall Gleeson and The White Lotus breakout Sabrina Impacciatore. They’ll be joined by a familiar face: The Office‘s Óscar Martínez, an exhausted accountant played by Oscar Nuñez.
Here’s everything we know about The Paper so far, including its release date, plot, cast, and more.

Domhnall Gleeson plays a publisher trying to salvage a struggling newspaper
The Paper is set in the newsroom of The Truth Teller, a struggling newspaper in Toledo, Ohio. The official logline reads, “The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it.”
If The Truth Teller‘s name is any indication, the paper is perhaps trying too hard to prove it’s no purveyor of “fake news.” And it’s true, according to Gleeson, that the series will engage with the perilous state of print journalism in the U.S.
Speaking alongside Impacciatore and Nuñez during an NBCUniversal Upfront event in New York City on May 12, Gleeson said, “We are three members of a wonderful ensemble cast of underdog characters that are banding together to keep journalism alive.”
He added, “My character has the unwavering optimistic belief that he can turn The Truth Teller to the glory of its heyday.”
Nuñez, meanwhile, assured viewers that, despite the new setting and cast, “Greg and Michael have invited us into the familiar world of the workplace, or should we say the office place? It’s a comedy, and it’s called The Paper.”
When does The Office spinoff come out?
The Paper will premiere on NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service in September 2025, though an exact premiere date is yet to be announced.

Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore star in ‘The Paper’
Like The Office, The Paper will feature an ensemble cast of nine-to-fivers.
In addition to Gleeson, Impacciatore, and Nuñez, the series will also star Melvin Gregg (American Vandal), Chelsea Frei (Animal Control), and Ramona Young (Never Have I Ever). Amusingly, the latter trio’s casting was first revealed after the Palisadian-Post in Pacific Palisades, Calif., revealed the actors were shadowing the paper’s staff as research.
The ensemble also includes Emmy winner Alex Edelman (Just For Us), BAFTA-winning actress Gbemisola Ikumelo (A League Of Their Own), and Tim Key (Alan Partridge).

Actors Melvin Gregg, Chelsea Frei, and Alex Edelman also star in NBCUniversal’s spinoff
Gleeson, who plays the publisher trying to salvage The Truth Teller, is best known for playing General Hux in the Star Wars sequel trilogy (2015–2019), as well as Bill Weasley in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (2010-2011). He was nominated for a Golden Globe for his turn in FX’s The Patient (2022), which he starred in opposite The Office‘s Steve Carell.
Carell revealed last summer that Gleeson reached out to him before accepting his role in The Paper. “I know Domhnall Gleeson, who I did The Patient with, is going to be one of the leads,” he said during a conversation with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show. “He’s an excellent actor. And he actually called me and asked, you know, ‘Should I do this? Is this something — did you enjoy it?’”
Impacciatore, who was born in Rome, has been acting in Italian productions for more than 25 years. She was introduced to U.S. audiences as hotel manager Valentina on season 2 of The White Lotus (2022), for which she received an Emmy nomination. Since then, she’s appeared in films like Across the River and Into the Trees (2022) and G20 (2025). Impacciatore is also slated to star opposite Oscar Isaac, Gal Gadot, and Al Pacino in the Martin Scorsese-produced film In the Hand of Dante.

‘Office’ alum Oscar Nuñez will reprise his role as Óscar Martínez on ‘The Paper’
After appearing on 176 episodes of The Office between 2005 and 2013, Nuñez starred on USA’s Benched (2014), TBS’s People of Earth (2016–2017), and Netflix’s Mr. Iglesias (2019–2020). He also appeared in several films, including Baywatch (2017), The Lost City (2022), and Disenchanted (2022).
Will Steve Carell’s Michael Scott be in The Office spinoff?
No, Carell confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter last year that his bumbling, big-hearted Michael Scott will not swing by the Toledo newspaper.
“I will be watching but I will not be showing up,” Carell said. “It’s just a new thing and there’s really no reason for my character to show up in something like that.”
Does that mean Nuñez will be the only Office alum to appear on The Paper? That remains to be seen, though Angela Kinsey and Jenna Fischer, Office alums and hosts of the Office Ladies rewatch podcast, visited the set during filming.

‘The Office’ ended its nine-season run in 2013
“Jenna and I stopped by set,” Kinsey said during an appearance on the Today show in April. “Greg had invited us, and we showed up, and not only was Oscar there, but our crew, so many of these wonderful people. ‘Cause the crew was our extended family, and we’re still really close with them, and that was really moving to see.”
