Chappell Roan’s a big star now, but she was once another one of the talented hopefuls auditioning for The Voice and America’s Got Talent. And The “Pink Pony Club” singer doesn’t have fond memories of at least one of the experiences.
“When I did the Voice audition, the producer or whoever the f— was watching did not even look up from his phone,” Roan told W Magazine in an interview published Wednesday. “He was like, ‘OK, next.” And I went up there and sang a cappella, the scariest thing ever. He never really looked at me.”
The Grammy winner, who was then 15, sang Rihanna’s “Stay.”
As viewers of The Voice know, the celebrity coaches on the show eliminate supremely talented singers on a regular basis. But it’s unthinkable that Roan, who released her 2023 debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, to amazing success, wasn’t among them.
The artist born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, said last month, however, that she was relieved she missed out on the chair turns. “I didn’t make it on the show, obviously,” she said on the Call Her Daddy podcast. “Thank god!”

That hadn’t even been Roan’s first attempt at a reality TV competition, she said.
“With America’s Got Talent, I was 13, and we flew to Austin, Texas, and waited in line with thousands of people at 4 a.m.” Roan said. “I sang ‘True Colors,’ by Cyndi Lauper. Did not make it either.”

Now 27, Roan has the bona fides to be a coach on a future season of The Voice, alongside the likes of current pros Michael Bublé, Kelsea Ballerini, John Legend, and Adam Levine. Already in the Playoffs this season, the show has announced that Snoop Dogg will be back on the reality competition next season.
As for Roan, she is killing it and released the hit song “The Giver” in March.
