Well…that didn’t last long. Just days after saying she wouldn’t break the new Cannes Film Festival dress code, Halle Berry walked the red carpet for the premiere of Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning…wearing a big, voluminous dress with a train—two things explicitly forbidden according to the new rules. Halle is currently in the south of France serving as a member of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival jury. And she was just as surprised as other attendees to learn of the festival’s new dress code, announced just a day before its start. In fact, she was so caught off guard that she had to change her Day 1 dress last minute. “I had an amazing dress by Gupta that I cannot wear tonight because it’s too big of a train,” Berry said at the Cannes jury press conferences, referencing designer Gaurav Gupta. “I’m not going to break the rules,” she added. Instead of her Gupta gown, Halle wore a black and white gown by Jacquemus with no train and no possibility of breaking the dress code.
Despite Halle’s dedication to the dress code, it appears she may have changed her mind after seeing other attendees break the rules with extravagant trains and gowns. On Wednesday, she attended the star-studded premiere of the most recent Mission Impossible film wearing a black and pink gown by Celia Kritharioti that featured a very voluminous high-low skirt and a train.
Halle has yet to comment on whether or not this dress broke the rules, but if it did, it certainly wasn’t the only gown on the red carpet testing the limits of Cannes’ fashion police. Mission Impossible star Hayley Atwell wore a stunning red gown from Giambattista Valli, which also featured a very voluminous skirt.
No doubt there will be other Cannes dress code rule breakers as the festival continues. Perhaps next year, the powers that be will announce a dress code with more warning so they have time to plan to adhere to it. Just a thought.
