  • Over a decade since starring in musical comedy Rock of Ages, Tom Cruise says he’s open to appearing in another movie musical

  • The Oscar-nominated actor revealed musicals, as well as dramas and action adventures, are on his dream to-do list while attending a London event ahead of receiving his honorary BFI Fellowship

  • Up next for Cruise is the world premiere of his Mission: Impossible 8 at the Cannes Film Festival

Tom Cruise is ready to serenade audiences again, given the chance.

While discussing his seasoned career with television presenter Edith Bowman in London on Sunday, May 11, Cruise revealed musicals are among his dream list of genres to tackle moving forward.

The conversation comes ahead of Cruise, 62, receiving an honorary British Film Institute Fellowship on Monday night, followed by the Oscar-nominated actor heading to the Cannes Film Festival for the world premiere of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.

“Definitely a musical. Absolutely, musicals,” the actor told Bowman. “You know, dramas, action adventures. It’s endless. My goals are endless.”

Cruise is no stranger to belting tunes on the big screen, having starred in 2012’s musical comedy Rock of Ages alongside Russell Brand, Alec Baldwin, Paul Giamatti, Julianne Hough, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Malin Åkerman, Mary J. Blige, and Bryan Cranston.

Based on the rock jukebox Broadway musical Rock of Ages by D’Arienzo, the film version sees Cruise play rock musician Stacee Jaxx and perform rock ballads such as Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar On Me” and Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive.”

Director Adam Shankman said he knew Cruise would work for the role — inspired by Axl Rose, Bret Michaels, Keith Richards and Jim Morrison — after his first voice lesson.

“Here’s the thing about Tom Cruise: I knew in my heart he would never put himself in harm’s way about taking on a part if he didn’t think he could deliver,” Shankman told Entertainment Weekly in 2011. “So it wasn’t until our first go around with his voice lesson that we sort of looked at each other and went, ‘This is gonna work!’ And we were basically dancing around the living room and high-fiving each other because he actually has a fantastic voice.”

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter at the red carpet premiere for the film, the Top Gun star shared how seriously he took the role, noting “It’s not just learning how to sing, I trained for five hours a day for many months.”

“In singing you have opera, you have pop, you’ve got Broadway, and then you’ve got rock. So it was finding out what is that rock voice and then kind of work on the behavior and the wardrobe from that,” Cruise added.

If the actor does go up for another musical role soon, he has some sage experience to bring along from his Rock of Ages role.

“Singing a song is very much like acting, you’re there to tell a story,” Cruise said. “And once I kind of figured that it out it was easier.”
