The cast and creators of The Conjuring: Last Rites are setting the stage for the most intense entry in the horror franchise for its final entry.
As part of Entertainment Weekly‘s exclusive first-look cover story on the last chapter in the saga of Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga), director Michael Chaves digs into the Smurl family haunting, which will be the subject of the upcoming movie.
“The Smurl case was the darkest thing we’ve ever seen in the series,” he says in the exclusive video above.
“They’re both contemplating hanging it up,” Peter Safran, a longtime producer of the Conjuring titles, adds in the featurette. “Unfortunately, because of their innate goodness, they actually can’t walk away from it.”
Farmiga further teases, “This demon has a vendetta, and what it wants is very, very personal.”
Rebecca Calder (Wrath of Man) and Elliot Cowan (Foundation) will appear as Janet and Jack Smurl in The Conjuring: Last Rites. Playing their four daughters are Kíla Lord Cassidy as Heather, Beau Gadsdon as Dawn, and Tilly Walker and Molly Cartwright as twins Carin and Shannon. Peter Wight and Kate Fahy also play Jack’s parents.

According to the New England Society of Psychic Research — the occult-investigating organization now run by Ed and Lorraine’s real-life daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Tony Spera — Janet and Jack Smurl moved their family into a duplex on Chase Street in West Pittston, Pa., in the 1970s. In the years that followed, the Smurls claimed to experience supernatural occurrences ranging from strange odors and voices all the way to ghostly molestations.
Mia Tomlinson will play now-grown Judy Warren, Ed and Lorraine’s daughter, who will be crucial to the plot of Last Rites. Ben Hardy plays Judy’s boyfriend and future husband, Tony Spera. The real-life Judy and Tony, who both cameo in the film, picked up Ed and Lorraine’s paranormal work after their retirement.
“You talk upping the scares, this is thrilling, scary…you never know where this is going,” Wilson says.
