Sarah Michelle Gellar is expressing her gratitude for her support system.
While speaking with PEOPLE exclusively at the Ask2BSure and Lifetime’s Pretty Hurts premiere in at the Aster Hotel in Hollywood, Calif. on Tuesday, May 20, the actress and mom of two, 48, opened up about how helpful her “tribe” is in the moments she can’t be there for her children.
Gellar, who shares her two children with her husband Freddie Prinze Jr., tells PEOPLE that her tribe “really comes in handy” whenever she can’t be there.
“When you’re up at 3 in the morning and you’re feeling helpless, and there’s a tribe of people you can call at 3 in the morning that are also up, and [will] be reminding you you’ve got this and you can do this,” she tells PEOPLE, adding she tends to “miss things” because of her career.
“My daughter had a huge recital last week. I couldn’t be there. I was working in Toronto, and my tribe was sending me videos, even though you weren’t supposed to video the show. They all secretly had their videos out,” she recalls. “They brought extra flowers, … and those were the things, especially in our situation, where that tribe really comes in handy because we’re not always physically here.”

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum and the She’s All That actor, 49, share daughter Charlotte Grace, 15, whom they welcomed in 2009, and son Rocky James, 12, who arrived in 2012. For Gellar, spending time with her kids tops even her most once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
“I’ve done some pretty amazing things. I’ve hosted Saturday Night Live. I’ve traveled the world,” she told Parade. “But for me, all that pales in comparison to bedtime [with my kids].” Motherhood, she told the outlet, “offered a missing part of myself that I never knew I was missing.”
While her kids have a famous actress mom, Gellar shared during a conversation with Glamour that they aren’t the biggest fans of her movies — except for one.
“I mean, my kids find it pretty cringe,” she said of her work. “I think they think they have better things to do than watch me on something, but they’ll watch my friends on stuff. Although my kids love I Know What You Did Last Summer.”

Back in August 2024, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum got real about how quickly her kids are growing up as she shared an Instagram Reel of herself dancing around while holding first-day-of-school signs for her son and daughter.
With “Sorry Not Sorry” by Demi Lovato playing in the background, the mom of two was seemingly excited for her little ones to head back to the classroom. However, she also got slightly emotional in her caption about how quickly time has passed.
“Parents …. Who gets me today?!?” she asked her fellow parent followers. “But also…. How do I have a high schooler and a middle schooler?!? Time is a bitch #backtoschool.”
