Robert Irwin is revealing how he feels about following in his older sister, Bindi Irwin’s footsteps and competing on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars.
During a May 2025 interview with Us Weekly, alongside Bindi and their mother, Terri Irwin, Robert said he was excited to appear on the upcoming 34th season of DWTS, which will premiere in fall 2025. He also said he was happy he got to see his sister win the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy in 2015.
“You have no idea how grateful I am to have Bindi go through this experience, not only did she do Dancing with the Stars, she won Dancing with the Stars, and was just such an incredible shining light,” said Robert during the Us Weekly interview.
He then told his sister that he thought it was “the coolest thing ever” when she was competing on the series.
“A little part of me, I was thinking, ‘I want to do this one day.’ And I just feel so grateful that I get to follow in your footsteps Bindi. But mate, you are going to have your work cut out for you, because I’m going to need all the help I can get. I’m not a dancer,” quipped Robert while speaking to his sister.
Bindi then assured him that he will be wonderful on DWTS, despite his lack of dance experience. She explained she believes Robert’s kindness and charm will help draw viewers in.
“You’ll have a wonderful partner and you can learn to dance. But the genuine passion, dedication, and determination, that comes from within. And that’s what, I think, will set you apart. Because you genuinely care. You are a really good human,” said Bindi to her brother.
During a May 10 interview with People magazine, Robert shared what his sister advised him to do while competing on DWTS.
“She has just said, ‘Go into this and make it your own.’ She said it’s going to be a completely different experience,” said Robert to People.
He also said he is “definitely going to be leaning on her a lot, as [he has] throughout [hi] entire life, to be honest,” during his time on DWTS. He explained that the 2006 death of their father, Steve Irwin, has brought them close together.
“I think loss brings a family together like nothing else, and for us, for Bindi and myself, we’ve always had each other’s backs through everything, and this is going to be no different. I feel very lucky that I’ve got her in my corner,” said Robert to People.
He also said his time on DWTS will be a full-circle moment.
“I mean, I was there as a little 11-year-old kid with my little blonde bowl cut watching her and trying to support from the sidelines, and now Bindi is going to be there supporting me, and she’ll have a lot more dance wisdom than 11-year-old Robert. I didn’t have much to bring to the table, but she does. She’s done it. She’s won it,” said Robert while speaking to People.
