Princess Charlotte’s Polka Dot Look at Soccer Is a Mini-Me Moment with Mom Kate Middleton

Princess Charlotte is following in her mom Kate Middleton’s footsteps with a passion for sports — and fashion to match.

On July 27, Princess Charlotte, 10, joined Prince William at the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 final match between England and Spain in Basel, Switzerland. While Kensington Palace previously announced that Prince William, 43, would attend the big game, it was a sweet surprise that his only daughter tagged along to see the team she’s long cheered for, where her outfit looked just like one in Princess Kate’s closet.

Princess Charlotte wore a navy and white polka dot dress with ruffled sleeves and a front bow at the soccer game, completing the look with white Mary Janes. The young royal also wore a white cardigan sweater for some of the match at St. Jakob-Park.

Charlotte’s navy and white polka dot ensemble instantly called back to a dress of the same pattern that Princess Kate, 43, wore to the Wimbledon Championships in 2022. The Princess of Wales aced summer style at the men’s singles final of the tennis tournament three years ago, when she wore a navy tea-length dress with white polka dots by Alessandra Rich with white cap-toe slingback pumps.

A close look showed that Kate’s dress then had a sailor-style collar with front bow, with the ruffled shoulders and bow detail of Charlotte’s latest look echoing a similar aesthetic.

Polka dots are a go-to pattern in Princess Kate’s rotation, especially when it comes to Wimbledon. The Princess of Wales has worn polka dots to the tennis tournament five times to date, kicking off the trend in 2017 and sporting spots twice to the tennis tournament in 2022.

In 2021, she wore a navy and white polka dot skirt with a white top and a navy blazer, and she dressed her daughter in something similar one year later.

In late July 2022, Princess Charlotte, then 7, teamed up with her dad William to send a special message to England’s women’s national soccer team, nicknamed the Lionesses, to wish them luck ahead of the Euro 2020 final against Germany.

There, Charlotte wore a navy outfit with white polka dots just a few weeks after Kate’s similar statement at Wimbledon.

“Good luck, I hope you win. Bye!” Charlotte said at the close of that clip, where she and William sat together outside.

The Princess of Wales is known for her timeless style and seems to dress Charlotte with a similar aesthetic. Just a few weeks ago, Princess Kate and Princess Charlotte had a subtle matching moment at the Wimbledon Championships, where Charlotte wore a white dress with navy piping and blue hair bow that complemented the cerulean hue of Kate’s dress there.

Prince William and Prince George, 12, also got in on the family fashion, where their blue suit jackets created cohesive coordination.

Princess Charlotte showed off her personal style with sunglasses, a charm bracelet and a pink manicure when she watched the men’s singles finals with her family, but her outfit had other hidden connections to her mom.

The white dress with piping was not only reminiscent of a similar sleeveless dress by Emilia Wickstead that Kate wore to the Royal Charity Polo Cup in 2022, but Charlotte’s summer number was designed by Sarah Burton for Givenchy.

Burton was the designer behind the bridal gown Kate wore for her royal wedding to William in 2011, during Burton’s tenure at Alexander McQueen.

She was announced as the creative director of Givenchy — the French fashion house behind the wedding gown Meghan Markle wore to marry Prince Harry in 2018 — in September 2024.
