It’s always a disappointing development whenever a beloved Broadway show prepares to conclude its time in New York’s premiere theater district. Such is especially the case for a show as popular as Dead Outlaw: the Tony-nominated musical that arrived on Broadway earlier this spring.
A rip-roaring Broadway musical unlike any other, Dead Outlaw follows the life (or rather the afterlife) of Elmer McCurdy, an 19th century American outlaw whose corpse is displayed in a variety of unorthodox places, including traveling carnivals, wax museums, macabre sideshows and amusement park attractions.
Earning significant praise upon its debut on the Great White Way of Broadway on April 27 of this year, Dead Outlaw eventually earned several distinguished accolades, including Tony Award nominations for Best Musical, Best Actor, Best Direction and Best Musical Score.
In spite of its incredibly warm reviews and various critical achievements, however, Dead Outlaw nevertheless struggled to garner a place among New York’s theatergoers, earning lower-than-average ticket sales throughout its time on Broadway.
In a statement acknowledging Dead Outlaw‘s final performance on June 29, producers Lia Vollack and Sonia Friedman spoke about the show’s time in New York, as well as their satisfaction with the production.
“Like Elmer McCurdy, Dead Outlaw is a true outlier — strange, singular, and enduring. It never followed the rules—and that has made it one of the most daring and fulfilling productions we’ve had the privilege to stage,” the producers said.
“Despite glowing reviews and a loyal following, the commercial momentum just wasn’t fast enough in a crowded season. As the show reminds us, sometimes the most incredible lives are cut short. This may be the end of Dead Outlaw’s time on Broadway, but we believe deeply in its future and the afterlife it so richly deserves. Endless thanks to the creators, cast, crew, co-producers, investors and Audible for bringing it to life. It’s been an honor.”
