Pedro Pascal’s sister Lux calls “Last of Us” killing worst of brother’s many onscreen deaths: ‘I burst into tears’

Lux Pascal wants her brother Pedro Pascal to live, damnit!

Reflecting on Pedro’s shocking death on “Through the Valley,” the second episode The Last of Us‘ second season, Lux told Remezcla on the red carpet at the 2025 Platino Awards, “I have to say that being Pedro Pascal’s sister, I knew how that episode would end. I knew what was going to happen. But even so, I saw it and I wanted to throw the iPad.”

Lux said she “burst into tears” when Pascal’s character, Joel, met his untimely end, which came as a grim eventuality to viewers familiar with the video game upon which the series is based, but a total surprise to the uninitiated.

“It’s not the first time he’s done it to me,” Lux continued. “It’s not the second time he’s done it to me. I think it’s the fourth time he’s done it to me. Because how many deaths has he had? Game of Thrones, Equalizer 2, The Last of Us – each is more violent than the other… seeing my brother die that way, I didn’t like it at all.”

Lux isn’t the only Pascal sibling who was shocked by Joel’s grisly death. Pedro himself told Entertainment Weekly in April that he was “in active denial” over his lauded run on The Last of Us coming to an end.

“I realize this more and more as I get older, I find myself slipping into denial that anything is over,” he continued. “I know that I’m forever bonded to so many members of the experience and just have to see them under different circumstances, but never will under the circumstances of playing Joel on The Last of Us. And, no, I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about it because it makes me sad.”

Pascal has already returned for more Last of Us season 2, appearing in a flashback in episode 5, “Feel Her Love.” But for Pedro fans like Lux, Joel’s death is yet more salt in a wound inflicted time and again by previous screen deaths.

Though the Chilean-born actor secured his first screen credits in the late 1990s, he didn’t land his breakthrough role until 2014. Prince Oberyn Martell, Game of Thrones‘ charismatic, lusty, quick-to-brawl noble stole hearts when he was introduced at the beginning of season 4. But he was just as quickly swept off stage, and in an infamously gruesome manner.

Oberyn volunteers to fight in a duel against Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson) who, true to his name, buries Oberyn in an avalanche of pain by knocking his teeth out, gouging his eyes out, and crushing his head with his bare hands. It may be a more graphic demise than Joel’s death by golf club, but after the journey The Last of Us season 1 took viewers on, the emotional scars from that demise will likely prove far more difficult to treat.
