Closing Her Restaurants
This past summer, Deen abruptly closed two of her restaurants, The Lady & Sons and The Chicken Box. In a statement on her Facebook and website, Deen wrote, “Hey, y’all, my sons and I made the heartfelt decision that Thursday, July 31st, was the last day of service for The Lady & Sons and The Chicken Box. Thank you for all the great memories and for your loyalty over the past 36 years.”
While the statement did not provide a reason for the closures, several of Deen’s other restaurants remain open.
Her New Documentary
Deen faced significant backlash in 2013 when she was dropped by the Food Network following allegations of racial discrimination and sexual harassment. The case was dismissed, but Deen admitted to using a racial slur in the workplace in a sworn deposition, leading to her firing from the Food Network and the cancellation of several partnerships.
This past fall, Deen debuted her new documentary, Canceled: The Paula Deen Story, at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film, which features her sons and business partners Jamie and Bobby, seeks to explain her views and why she feels she got a raw deal. “I would have been fine had the whole story been told — had the real story been told,” Deen told The Hollywood Reporter. “They took this woman [the plaintiff], who is a known liar, they took her word and ran with it, and no one ever investigated any further. I was not going to be happy until the world saw the truth.”
