Patrick Dempsey Reveals He Wanted Eric Dane as His Brother in ‘Memory of a Killer’ Before Actor’s Tragic Death

Patrick Dempsey revealed he tried to cast former ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ co-star Eric Dane as his brother in Fox’s ‘Memory of a Killer’ before ALS made it impossible, marking a heartbreaking final chapter in their close collaboration.

Patrick Dempsey and Eric Dane were on the verge of reuniting on screen for the first time since ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ but ALS—but ALS ended that hope too soon.

In an interview with Metro UK, Dempsey revealed he tried to cast Dane as his on-screen brother in Fox’s ‘Memory of a Killer,’ a role deeply tied to the show’s central narrative—a contract killer and family man losing his memory. The role was designed to cast a character suffering from advanced dementia—mirroring Angelo’s and resonating deeply with audiences familiar with Dane’s own journey.

Dempsey shares, ‘I tried to get him hired to play my brother in the show.’ Their agents worked tirelessly to make the reunion happen, but ALS, diagnosed at 49, progressed too fast.

“I was happy to see that he was here in Toronto working on, I think, another medical drama [Brilliant Minds].”

Dane died at the age of 51 on Feb 19, leaving behind a legacy as the “McSteamy” opposite Dempsey’s “McDreamy” that defined early ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’ Fans grew to love their friendship on-screen and off, making the failed reunion a poignant end.

Dempsey reflects: “He was a remarkable actor and a remarkable man to work with, and he is deeply missed.”

Why This Almost-Happened Reunion Changes the Way We See ‘Memory of a Killer’

‘Memory of a Killer’ already promised emotional depth—showing a contract killer struggling to keep his family life and personal struggles private. Casting Dane would have heightened the emotional core, casting two former friends whose off-screen bond was just as beloved as their on-screen characters.

The character—the brother with dementia—would have mirrored Dane’s own public struggle, a choice that Dempsey pushed for in homage to his friend’s fight against the disease.

Dane’s Courage Is the Legacy ‘Memory of a Killer’ Wants to Honor

Even during the final months, Dane worked tirelessly to bring awareness to ALS. Dempsey told Parade that Dane’s strength stayed with him to the last, making it “virtually impossible” to film, yet impossibly brave. The actor stayed on the set of Toronto series, ‘Brilliant Minds,’ until flesh failed flesh.

Dane was not just an actor; he became an ALS activist, raising awareness and funds as his body fought against ALS. Even as he publicly battled the disease, he stayed on the sets, ensuring that ‘Brilliant Minds’ had the lead they cast—until his body fought until the end.

Fans Smile at the Legacy of Dr. Mark Sloan, Ponder What Could Have Been

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ fans remember Dr. Mark Sloan for his suaveness, his complicated past with McDreamy, and his profound bromance with Dr. Arizona. His death still lingers—wrapped in a medical go-kart, but this new reveal shows that Dane was always more than that character, embodying resilience and friendship.

Fans now wonder whether Dane’s final screen role would have been this entirely different type of drama—a contract killer’s brother suffering from dementia, opposite Dempsey’s killer and Wallace Shawjang’s cop.

“Memory of a Killer” continues to fast expression of Patrick Dempsey’s emotional depth, behind the scenes, fighting to cast Eric Dane—a role lost to ALS, but everything gained in fans growing more respect for Patrick Dempsey, fighting to keep his memory alive.
