NEED TO KNOW

  • Ozzy Osbourne’s daughter Kelly Osbourne sang at his funeral, said bandmate Robert Trujillo

  • Kelly’s lyrics blew away as she sang, which Trujillo said was “almost like Ozzy was having fun with her”

  • Osbourne died on July 22 at age 76

Ozzy Osbourne once said he wanted his funeral to be a celebratory affair complete with pranks — and it seems he got his wish.

The legendary rocker died on July 22 at age 76, and was laid to rest in a private funeral attended by family and friends. Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo, a longtime member of Osbourne’s backing band, was among the attendees, and now, the rocker has revealed some of the day’s more memorable occurrences.

Among those? The fact that Osbourne’s daughter Kelly, 40, performed at the ceremony — and had to deal with some pesky wind.

“It had been raining at the beginning of the service… and then as it sort of progressed through the service, the weather would change and different things would happen,” Trujillo said on SiriusXM’s Trunk Nation with Eddie Trunk on Aug. 7. “When Kelly was singing, her lyrics flew. Like the wind blew her lyrics away. It was almost like Ozzy was having fun with her.”

And when Osbourne’s fellow Black Sabbath co-founder Geezer Butler addressed the crowd, the sun finally came out, Trujillo recalled.

“Geezer broke down in tears. He had a hard time, obviously, speaking. And then he came back up and he delivered an amazing eulogy,” he says. “The sun actually came out, and then it was beautiful from that moment on.”

Though Trujillo said the day was emotional and there “were a lot of tears,” he also noted some “very magical moments,” and others filled with humor.

“It was a small group of people but it was very, very beautiful… It was very sad, but at the same time, some of the speeches were, as you could imagine, pretty funny,” he said. “People sharing stories and all of a sudden there’s laughter, and ‘I remember this, I remember that.’ There’s so many stories. It felt like there was closure from this. And I’m glad that we went. My wife Chloe and I went and shared that and we were able to have that moment with the family.”

Osbourne previously revealed his hopes for his funeral in a 2011 column for The Times, writing that he didn’t care what music was played, so long as it made his survivors happy.

“I do want to make sure it’s a celebration, not a mope-fest,” he wrote. “I’d also like some pranks; maybe the sound of knocking inside the coffin; or a video of me asking my doctor for a second opinion on his diagnosis of ‘death.’ There’ll be no harping on the bad times.”

The “Crazy Train” singer was honored with a funeral procession through his hometown of Birmingham, England on July 30. Fans lined the streets of the British city to say goodbye, and wife Sharon and kids Kelly, Jack, Aimee and Louis got out on the Black Sabbath bridge to view the many tributes left by fans.
