The red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art doubled as a WNBA tunnel today as two New York Liberty players made their debut at the Met Gala.
Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart made their grand arrival in custom Sergio Hudson looks, alongside their team’s owner, Clara Wu Tsa.
Stewart leaned into the suit theme in a sleek white suit jacket, tailored trousers, and matching cape, plus an icy wide-brim hat and kiss curls framing her face (a big trend on this year’s red carpet).
Ionescu, meanwhile, went sporty in a white bra top paired with a silky black blazer, a stretchy black maxi skirt, and white see-through heels. She added some shimmer with layers of diamonds: dangly earrings, a tennis necklace, and several bracelets and rings.
Wu Tsa was classic in a strapless black gown with a frilly white eyelet hem, which she paired with a green-stone necklace and matching dangly earrings.
Over the last couple of years, the WNBA has embraced fashion in a new way, incorporating street style into players’ everyday lives and showcasing the athletes’ fits before big games—and elsewhere. Just look back at last month’s fashion-filled WNBA draft.
This change has, of course, opened up many opportunities within the fashion world for the basketball stars. Earlier this year, Ionescu experienced her first Paris Fashion Week with Dior and got to wear a custom look from the brand to attend the Fall/Winter 2025–2026 menswear show. “I’m trying to be open-minded and step outside my comfort zone,” she told Harper’s Bazaar while in Paris.
Ionescu added that her growing appreciation for fashion is a direct result of the attention the WNBA tunnel walk has gotten. “You go from college, where you just wear your warm-up gear to the game, to then getting into the pros, where, you know, especially in New York, it’s a big deal walking into the tunnel. Everyone’s anticipating what you’re going to wear,” she said, adding, “I’m really excited to be able to just be a part of this world and continue to learn as I find interest in this space.”
And now, here she is with her teammate, dominating fashion’s biggest night.
