The future of the Mortal Kombat film franchise looks incredibly promising, as screenwriter Jeremy Slater has revealed that Warner Bros. and New Line are so impressed with the upcoming Mortal Kombat II that they’ve already tasked him with penning a third film. This extraordinary show of confidence, shared at New York Comic Con, signals a strong belief in the sequel’s potential and the enduring passion of its fanbase.

Fans eager for more brutal action and iconic characters in the Mortal Kombat cinematic universe have cause for celebration. At a recent panel at New York Comic Con on Saturday, October 11, 2025, Jeremy Slater, co-writer of the highly anticipated Mortal Kombat II, dropped a bombshell: he’s already been asked to start working on the script for a third movie.

“Our friends at New Line and Warner Bros. are so happy with this movie. They are so excited. They are so convinced there is a giant fanbase waiting for it that they already hired me to start writing the next installment,” Slater enthusiastically shared with the audience, as reported by People. This unprecedented show of studio faith, coming well before the sequel’s theatrical debut, underscores a profound belief in the franchise’s revitalized appeal and its ability to connect with a global audience.

The Studio’s Unwavering Faith and the Call to Fans

The decision to greenlight a third film’s script at such an early stage is a rare occurrence in Hollywood, signaling that Warner Bros. views Mortal Kombat II as a major win. This confidence is a testament to the hard work of director Simon McQuoid, Slater, and the entire cast and crew.

However, Slater also made it clear that audience participation remains crucial for the franchise’s continued growth. He encouraged fans to turn out in force when the sequel is released. “So when two comes out in theaters, make sure they know there is an audience for this movie, because we want to keep making them for you guys,” he urged, highlighting the importance of box office success to transform these early script plans into a fully realized third film.

A Victim of Its Own Success: The 2026 Delay

The panel, which included stars Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Tati Gabrielle, and Martyn Ford, as well as director Simon McQuoid, also addressed the highly debated delay of Mortal Kombat II. Originally slated for an October 2025 release, the film was pushed back to May 15, 2026. McQuoid offered a unique perspective on the delay, stating, “This movie is actually a victim of our own success.”

He elaborated on the decision, explaining, “Every time people have seen this movie, it sort of gained momentum. And we’ve created a massive summer blockbuster. I think we should all be proud of the fact that Mortal Kombat II and the franchise itself is going to kick off summer next year.” The director’s comments suggest that the studio recognized the film’s significant potential and opted for a prime summer release window to maximize its impact, positioning it as a major event rather than a standard fall offering.

Johnny Cage’s Redemption Arc Takes Center Stage

One of the most anticipated aspects of Mortal Kombat II is the introduction of fan-favorite character Johnny Cage, portrayed by Karl Urban. His inclusion was heavily teased at the end of the 2021 film, and his role in the sequel promises a compelling character journey. Reports from Deadline Hollywood had confirmed Slater‘s involvement in scripting the sequel, ensuring Cage‘s long-awaited debut.

Urban shed light on Cage’s initial state in the film, describing him as a “very dispirited character” whose career is “completely in the tank.” He explained that Cage has “not been keeping up with his martial arts training” and has lost the “brash, cocky” demeanor known from the games, appearing as “just a broken man.” However, Urban teased a significant transformation: “Through the course of the movie, you’re going to get to see him transform into a true champion of Earthrealm. A hero. You see him sort of involuntarily get launched into this insane action epic adventure.” This arc is sure to resonate with fans eager to see Johnny Cage reclaim his glory.

Expanding the Earthrealm Roster and the Road Ahead

The sequel builds on the foundation of 2021’s Mortal Kombat by bringing back key figures and introducing new, iconic characters. Simon McQuoid returns as director, with Ed Boon, co-creator of the original video game series, moderating the Comic Con panel.

Returning cast members include:

  • Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden
  • Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Briggs
  • Ludi Lin as Liu Kang
  • Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade
  • Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero

New additions to the ensemble cast are equally exciting:

  • Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, a casting decision previously highlighted by The Hollywood Reporter.
  • Tati Gabrielle as Jade
  • Martyn Ford as the formidable villain Shao Kahn

The previous film’s Sub-Zero actor, Joe Taslim, had famously revealed his contract for four additional Mortal Kombat films, if the studio chose to expand the franchise, a detail reported by Variety. This early commitment from a lead actor, coupled with Slater’s current revelation, paints a picture of a long-term vision for the Mortal Kombat saga. With the studio’s enthusiasm and a dedicated fanbase, the path to a full-fledged trilogy, and potentially more, seems more assured than ever.
