Veteran actor Laurence Fishburne has set the fan community ablaze with his recent declaration at the 2025 New York Comic Con, openly campaigning to portray Professor Charles Xavier, the iconic leader of the X-Men, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This isn’t Fishburne’s first foray into the world of Marvel, and his candid pitch has ignited significant debate and excitement about the future of mutants on the big screen.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is gearing up for its highly anticipated introduction of the X-Men, and one legendary actor is making his intentions clear. During a Matrix reunion panel at the 2025 New York Comic Con, Laurence Fishburne, known for his powerful performances, pitched himself directly for the role of Professor Charles Xavier, the telepathic founder of the X-Men. His suggestion was met with immediate enthusiasm from the crowd and even earned a playful “Approved. Greenlit!” from panel host Josh Horowitz, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.

A Familiar Face in the Marvel Multiverse

While Fishburne’s name might be new to some discussions surrounding Professor X, his connection to Marvel runs deep. The 64-year-old actor has a rich history across various Marvel projects, demonstrating his versatility and genuine appreciation for the comic book universe.

His prior Marvel roles include:

  • Dr. Bill Foster in 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp, where he played a former colleague of Hank Pym with his own connection to Giant-Man technology.
  • Reprising his role as Dr. Bill Foster in the animated series What If…?, exploring alternate realities within the MCU.
  • Voicing Beyonder in Disney Channel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, an animated series showcasing his vocal talents.
  • Lending his voice to Norrin Radd / Silver Surfer in the 20th Century Fox film Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), a pre-MCU Marvel film.

Interestingly, Fishburne has also openly admitted to being a “Marvel guy,” a sentiment he shared despite having portrayed Perry White in the DC Extended Universe films Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. This makes him one of the few actors to have significant roles in both major comic book universes. He even approached Marvel years ago with ideas for characters he could play before being offered the role of Bill Foster, as detailed by People magazine.

The Legacy of Professor X and the MCU’s Mutant Future

The role of Professor Charles Xavier carries significant weight and a storied cinematic history. The character has been masterfully brought to life by two acclaimed actors in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men film series:

  • Sir Patrick Stewart, who originated the role and most recently appeared as an alternate-dimension version of Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Stewart is also slated to return in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.
  • James McAvoy, who portrayed a younger Xavier in the X-Men: First Class timeline, exploring the character’s origins and his complex relationship with Magneto.

The integration of mutants into the MCU became possible after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige confirmed earlier this year that the X-Men will be fully recast following the events of Avengers: Secret Wars, paving the way for a fresh take on the beloved characters. While classic actors like Stewart will make appearances in transitional films like Avengers: Doomsday, the new era calls for a new generation of mutants, and potentially, a new Professor X.

Fishburne’s Pitch: Why It Resonates

Laurence Fishburne’s suggestion for Professor X has been met with significant fan approval, and for good reason. His commanding presence, intellectual gravitas, and extensive acting range make him a compelling candidate. Fans often discuss his ability to embody authority and wisdom, qualities essential for Charles Xavier, who serves as both a mentor and a powerful mutant in his own right.

When asked about a second dream role, Fishburne admitted he was flexible, telling the audience, “I don’t know, I’m gonna let you guys decide.” However, he quickly shut down a suggestion of joining the Star Wars universe, humorously stating, “No, I’m good… I’m good on the couch with Star Wars. I don’t need a lightsaber.” His focus, he explained, is always on “the next one,” seeking out unique and challenging projects, much like his iconic role in The Matrix, which celebrated its 25th anniversary recently.

The Wider Conversation: Other X-Men Casting Whispers

The X-Men casting rumors were a hot topic at New York Comic Con this year. On the same day Fishburne made his pitch, former X-Men stars James McAvoy (who played young Professor X) and Elliot Page (Kitty Pryde) also weighed in on recent speculation. When asked about rumored castings like Colman Domingo as Professor X and Bella Ramsey as Kitty Pryde, both actors expressed support.

Page remarked, “Yes, absolutely. They sound fantastic. It’d be just so exciting to see people do a take on a new iteration.” McAvoy echoed this sentiment, adding, “Look, I’m excited to see what happens next. I was a fan before I was an employee and I’ll be a fan again! Colman Domingo sounds amazing, though!” This ongoing discussion highlights the passionate fan base and the many exciting possibilities for the MCU’s X-Men.

In a related note from the same event, Fishburne’s Matrix co-star Joe Pantoliano also confirmed his involvement in an undisclosed role for Marvel’s upcoming television series Wonder Man, further weaving the fabric of the cinematic universe with familiar faces.

As Marvel prepares to fully unleash the mutants into its expansive cinematic world, Laurence Fishburne’s enthusiastic bid for Professor X adds a compelling and exciting dimension to the casting conversation, leaving fans eager to see who will ultimately lead the next generation of X-Men.
