Pennsylvania state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta was elected as a vice chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) Saturday, after the party revoked an earlier election that elevated David Hogg to one of the vice chairs.

Kenyatta, who was also elected in that first election, secured the position again after receiving 374.5 votes, or 99 percent of voting members in the re-vote. Hogg did not run this time around, and the party will select among three female candidates on Tuesday for a second vacant vice chair role.

“Malcolm Kenyatta has been a strong and effective leader as DNC Vice Chair. He has been committed to this work since day one, and I look forward to continuing this fight with him,” said DNC Chair Ken Martin.

DNC Vice Chair David Hogg announced Wednesday that he would not be running for reelection for his spot. His decision came after DNC members voted 294 to 99 to redo the vice chair election of Hogg and Kenyatta.

Hogg had roiled the party with his announcement that the party would primary some incumbents seen as being ineffective or unfit for the political moment. He has said that work will continue through his Leaders We Deserve group.

“Ultimately, I have decided to not run in this upcoming election so the party can focus on what really matters. I need to do this work with Leaders We Deserve, and it is going to remain my number one mission to build the strongest party possible,” he added.

The vote to redo the election was prompted by Oklahoma DNC member Kalyn Free, who took issue with how the vice chair election was conducted, claiming it unjustly gave male candidates an advantage.

It also came after audio was leaked of Martin discussing how badly Hogg had damaged his credibility early in their tenure, and suggesting he didn’t want the job.

The female candidates for the DNC vice chair role will be eligible to run from Sunday to next Tuesday.
