Julia Fox’s Clown Makeup Is Actually a Nod to a Hollywood Classic

Every time I think Julia Fox has worn her most eye-popping look yet, she proves me wrong. From her chainmail butt cleavage dress to her ice skate heels, somehow she always manages to outdo herself. And her appearance at the 2025 Fashion Trust U.S. Awards was no different thanks to Julia’s incredible clown makeup—or mime makeup, depending on who you ask.

Julia walked the red carpet at the event in a hip-hugging pencil skirt and long sleeve blouse set by Marni. The set, per W Magazine, is from Marni’s 2025 collection, and is bright white with a pattern of hand-painted black red roses. While the gown itself was a surprisingly modest look for the author (this is the same woman who wore teeny tiny metal lingerie to New York Fashion Week in 2023), nothing about the look was subtle (complimentary). She topped off the look with neon green pin curls and a giant black hat, making her impossible to miss. But the true centerpiece of the look was the makeup.

In classic mime tradition, Julia’s face was painted ghost white, creating a blank canvas for the rest of her makeup. Her lips were painted a bright red and her cheeks given a bright, coral glow, her eyes defined with heavy black eyeliner, and, most impressively, she had painted on arched brows so large, they consumed her entire forehead.

In an interview with her stylist, Briana Andalore, posted on Instagram, Julia said she was “going for Bette Davis, Joan Crawford vibes,” adding that she was specifically channeling their 1962 classic film, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? Elaborating on what it tkaes to put a look like this together, Julia called it “mayhem,” adding, “It’s not like a pre-game, it’s very much like getting ready to go to war.”

In the end it’s all worth it, said the fashion icon: “It always comes together when the fashion gods are shining upon us, which they are.” My personal plea to the fashion gods? Please, never ever stop shinning on Julia Fox.
