One Survivor season ends, and another one begins. Such is the circle of reality TV life.
At the conclusion of the emotional Survivor 48 finale, Jeff Probst gave us our first look at the next installment in the reality franchise: Survivor 49. He also gave Entertainment Weekly a clue as to what to expect when the season kicks off this fall on CBS.
“Every season of Survivor is unique, and that is definitely the case for Survivor 49,” the host and showrunner tells EW. “This is a very likable and quirky group of players that are going to encounter a Fijian summer so sweltering it feels like the jungle is breathing on you.”
EW was on location for season 49 filming, and can back up what Probst is saying about this being a quirky group of players. But you don’t need to take our word for it. Just check out the promo for yourself below.
Yes, that is one player waxing nautical on her desire to play the game like a mermaid and “lure people in with my words.” Yes, that is another contestant who proclaims that “one of my favorite pastimes is kissing butt.” Yes, we can sympathize with the journalist who talks about our shared profession being “freaking cutthroat.” And yes, we can’t but wonder if one person might somehow be related to Kamilla when he notes that “my parents laughed in my face when I applied to be on Survivor.” (Get it together, skeptical moms and dads!)
But let’s cut to the chase here. What probably grabbed your attention the most was the guy who announced, “My name is Rizzo, but I go by the man, the myth, the legend R-I-Z-G-O-D. Riz God, baby!” To be clear, judging by interactions before the game, his nickname is not merely Riz God, but rather “the man, the myth, the legend R-I-Z-G-O-D. Riz God, baby!” For that is exactly how he also introduced himself during pre-game interviews as well. #InstantLegend.

However, what is perhaps even more noteworthy about Probst’s quote about Survivor 49 is his comment that players must deal with “a Fijian summer so sweltering it feels like the jungle is breathing on you.” Players on odd numbered Survivor seasons tend to have to worry more about the rain than the heat, but it seems this crew will have the latter to contend with. Perhaps that is why one contestant opines that “I feel like this is when Survivor turns into a horror movie.”
And now we have our first intel and footage from said horror movie. The question now becomes: Is the man, the myth, the legend R-I-Z-G-O-D. Riz God, baby the monster or the victim? Or maybe the mermaid is the monster! Either way, we’ll have to wait until this fall to find out.
