What happens when two of the most beloved comedic actors sit down for a chat? You get a funny, heartfelt, and wide-ranging conversation. Paul Rudd recently joined longtime friend Amy Poehler on her podcast Good Hang, where the two covered everything from their time working together and his close friendship with Jon Hamm to whether less really is more, and even the job he held while putting himself through acting school.
While the entire conversation is a joy to listen to, one of the highlights was hearing Paul talk about his time DJing bar mitzvahs and other kid parties while attending acting school in California. Tune in around the 12:50 mark to find out which songs got the parties going—and the hilarious reason one track, in particular, was always a crowd favorite.
Amy asked which songs really got people on the dance floor, throwing out C+C Music Factory as a guess—which Paul confirmed was definitely a hit at the time. But the one song kids waited for was Billy Idol’s “Mony Mony.”
Why? Well, at the time, there was a popular (and very inappropriate) chant that went with the song, and naturally, the 13-year-olds couldn’t wait to yell it at full volume, leaving many unsuspecting Jewish parents and grandparents stunned and confused by what they’d heard!

This isn’t the first time Paul has shared stories about his DJing days—he’s joked about it in several interviews, and it’s always fun to hear about. In a 2015 interview with Howard Stern, he talked about how he ended up making surprisingly good money at parties, thanks to what he calls his signature “dork dance.”
He spoke about what happened after a day of doing 18 hours of DJing, “I started dancing like a freak and mocking the whole thing.” The kids loved it, and he ended up taking over the dance floor. After that, people started requesting — and paying extra — for the “dork dance”!
