Legendary rock star Ozzy Osbourne has passed away after a years long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

His death was confirmed in a statement to The Sun on Tuesday, July 22.

“It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning,” the statement read. “He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time. Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis.”

At the time of his death, Ozzy Osbourne’s net worth shows that his estate’s accumulation of wealth has been staggering, even as his health declined to the point that he’d had to permanently retire from touring. The rock legend and husband to reality and former daytime TV staple Sharon Osbourne amassed a large fortune since first hitting the music scene in the 1970s.

How did Ozzy Osbourne become famous?

Ozzy Osbourne was born John Michael Osbourne in Birmingham, England, in December 1948. He suffered from dyslexia and traumatic sexual abuse from school bullies as a child, eventually dropping out of school when he was 15 years old. After working odd jobs and construction, as well as serving time in jail for petty crimes, Osbourne discovered the Beatles in 1963. They inspired him to pursue a career in music.

He joined Geezer Butler’s band Rare Breed in 1967, but after two gigs, the group disbanded. He and Butler then formed the Polka Tulk Blues with Bill Ward and Tony Iommi, eventually changing their name to Earth, then to Black Sabbath in 1969. They released their self-titled first album on Warner Bros. Records the following year to resounding success. Black Sabbath became one of the biggest bands of all time and a key foundation in the heavy metal genre.

After several successful albums and some solo work with Blizzard of Ozz, Black Sabbath booted Osbourne from the band in 1979 due to his substance abuse and erratic behavior.
