It’s easy to forget that celebrities have a real life outside of being famous. Meaning, like you, they spend time in the kitchen and work on perfecting their home-cooked steaks. At least, that’s what Kiefer Sutherland does.
TheDesignated Survivorand 24 star calls himself a “challenged chef” in a YouTube video, but he also made it clear that he knows his way around the kitchen. Sutherland said he was inspired to learn to cook because of his kids. “One of the things that scared me the most about being a parent was that I would poison my children by under-cooking or poorly preparing their food,” he said. “I have friends that helped me out and I learned a couple of things along the way.”
Sutherland also stressed that “by no stretch am I a great cook,” but he wanted to share shortcuts that he’s learned. That includes his favorite steak recipe. “I guarantee it will taste better than 90% of the steaks you will get at a high-end restaurant,” he said. That’s a lot of hype for a steak recipe, and we’re here for it.
Recipe-sharing is a big thing for Sutherland. In fact, he followed this recipe up with one for beef in oyster sauce. “It will impress your friends… after all, isn’t that what life’s about?” he wrote in the caption.

What Makes Kiefer Sutherland’s Steak So Great?
Steak can be hard to cook properly, but Sutherland’s approach is easy to follow, with clear directions on seasoning and timing to create a practically fool-proof result.
One hack Sutherland shared is that the seasoning shouldn’t be complicated. “I’ve found that the more complicated you make it, the more chances you have to screw up,” he said.

He’s full of these little tips, including recommending that you use a timer when you cook your steak to help you get the timing just right. He suggests having all of the utensils you’ll need ready to go, too, “so you’re not running around trying to find stuff while you’re cooking.” Sutherland even shared that he puts tin foil around his stovetop before cooking to help contain splatters and make clean-up easy, which is kind of genius.
Sutherland uses a combination of cooking methods to create a steak that’s seared and delicious on the outside and juicy and tender on the inside. Even better, the process is fast and easy. From start to finish, you’re looking at about 10 minutes of cook time.

How to Make Kiefer Sutherland’s Steak Recipe
Sutherland’s steak recipe starts by preheating the oven to 450°. While the oven heats up, prep your steak by seasoning it all over with salt and cracked pepper.
After that, add a light dusting of Lawry’s seasoning salt, as well as Italian seasoning. Flip the steak, seasoned side down, on a piece of aluminum foil. (You can season the other side when it’s on the stovetop.)
Heat up a frying pan until it’s hot but not smoking. Add a generous amount of olive oil and sear both sides of your steak, making sure to get the edges too.

From there, add rosemary and garlic to the frying pan. Then, put the skillet on the middle rack of the oven. Sutherland recommends letting it cook for 7 and a half minutes for medium-rare and 8 minutes if you prefer it more well-done.
Once the steak is finished cooking, let it rest on top of two spoons (to encourage airflow below) for about five minutes before cutting into it. This helps it finish cooking while sealing in the juices. “It’s incredibly juicy and incredibly flavorful,” Sutherland says. Leave it to Jack Bauer to raise the steaks!
