A groom has gone viral for his unexpected reaction to his bride’s wedding surprise.

Singer-songwriter and vocal coach Ortal Edri surprised her partner of 12 years, Shamir Fink, during their intimate wedding ceremony on Friday, Aug. 1, at the Graceland Wedding Chapel, in Las Vegas, by singing two songs. Instead of reacting to the heartfelt performances with visual joy, Fink tucked himself away in the corner of the room, causing Edri to find him and pull him back to the altar.

“Pov: When you decide to surprise your camera-shy husband with a wedding song and you had to chase him down the chapel because he disappeared on you 😭,” Edri wrote in an onscreen text overlay of a video of her singing “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley.

She added in her caption: “Surprising my shy husband with his favorite Elvis song at our Vegas wedding ended up Elvis enjoyed it more 😭.”

Since posting her video on Tuesday, Aug. 5, the clip has amassed more than 13 million views and 1 million likes. There are 20,000 “mixed” comments — “some are loving and supportive, and others are cruel or judgmental.”

“It’s like a car crash, I cant look away,” one of the top comments reads.

“I’ve never seen someone regret their wedding instantly,” someone else wrote, with another TikToker adding, “I think we all just watched a forced marriage or kidnapping.”

Although some commenters thought that the “uncomfortable” situation was the groom’s “worst nightmare,” Edri tells PEOPLE that the “awkward” interaction was simply a result of Fink’s shyness combined with too much alcohol.

“My husband is definitely shy and doesn’t enjoy being in the spotlight — unlike me, I absolutely love it!” she says. “To be honest, he also had a bit too much to drink before the ceremony, so he was a little tipsy. Combine that with the pressure and all the excitement. As for what was going through his mind — probably not much in that exact moment. He just went with what he was feeling.”

Edri chose to sing the 1961 hit song as a nod to the 30-minute ceremony, was was officiated by an Elvis impersonator, and because Fink’s late father was “a huge Elvis fan and loved that particular song.”

“It felt special to include a tribute to him during such a meaningful moment in our lives,” she says.

She then sang “My All” by Mariah Carey because she “always dreamed of singing it to my person someday.” Edri also posed a clip from her second performance, which has more than 2 million views.

To “the haters,” the newlyweds have one message: “We love you too — and we understand that you’re only seeing a small part of the full story.”

“The truth is, from the moment Shamir proposed until the wedding itself, everything happened so fast,” Edri shares, noting that Fink popped the question just a few days before the wedding.

“And to make sure he didn’t change his mind, we planned the wedding in four days!” she jokes, adding, “We always knew we wanted to get married in Vegas with Elvis — something fun, unconventional and lighthearted. Once we arrived in Vegas and he proposed, we immediately booked a chapel and put it all together super quickly.”

The pair were “under a lot of pressure to pull it all together” rapidly.

“We invited close friends who managed to come on short notice, while our families unfortunately couldn’t make it to Vegas,” Edri says. “On top of that, wedding ceremonies in Vegas are timed and very quick, so everything moved fast — and with all the excitement, this is how it turned out. We just tried to make the most of it with what we had.”

After the wedding, the couple and their five friends who joined them for the ceremony celebrated at a hotel.

“We went out to great restaurants and, of course, I kept singing for them at the hotel too!” Edri says.

Edri and Fink met at an event where Edri was performing as a singer and Fink was the DJ. Now, Fink is a music producer, including for Edri’s work, and the duo are currently writing, composing and recording Edri’s debut album, which is set to be released soon.
