Lena Dunham opened up about dealing with body shaming in Hollywood no matter what size she’s been
The star said that’s why she’s so protective over her actors and “ready to fight” if any of them face criticism
She admitted that unfortunately, body shaming in the industry is “pretty inevitable”
Although she’s “used to” body shaming, Lena Dunham is ready to fight when it comes to others in Hollywood dealing with what she has over the years.
During an interview with Variety, published Tuesday, July 8, the 39-year-old star opened up about facing criticism of her appearance no matter what size she’s been.
“I have been in Hollywood at every size,” she told the outlet. “I have been a sample size, I have had my body change because of life, illness, aging, menopause. And it is merciless wherever you are.”

After facing body shaming while her hit show Girls was airing, Dunham decided to step back from her on-screen role. She admitted that her personal experience is why she’s so protective of Megan Stalter, who stars in her semi-autobiographical comedy series Too Much, noting, “I probably wasn’t protective enough of myself.”
“If anybody has anything to say about any of my actors— I keep my mouth shut on most things these days but try a b—-. I’m not playing around here,” she said. “It’s the only time that I’m going to be taking my hoops out, ready to fight.”
Despite the success of Girls, which featured a cast of all body types, Dunham doesn’t think the world has become more accepting.
“I wish I could say yes, but I really don’t. I think we had this moment: Body positivity was here, and then it was gone,” she explained. “I obviously am not critical of anybody’s choice, whether it’s to use Ozempic — people should be allowed to have whatever body they feel comfortable in. But we cannot pretend that the bodies people want aren’t influenced, and we can’t claim it’s always for health reasons and not for aesthetic reasons.”

Dunham said that, unfortunately, body shaming in Hollywood is “pretty inevitable.”
“But just because I’ve become used to it for myself,” she added, “doesn’t mean that I feel comfortable about it for anyone else.”
