On Saturday, July 26, country music superstar George Strait and Wrangler jeans debuted a tribute to cowboys in honor of National Day of the Cowboy. It features Strait, with his deep, mellifluous voice, reading an excerpt of “Legacy of a Rodeo Man,” a poem by the late artist Baxter Black.
The Instagram video is captioned, “His legacy is rodeo. And Cowboy is his name.
“To celebrate National Day of the Cowboy, Wrangler presents an excerpt from ‘Legacy of a Rodeo Man’ by Baxter Black, read by George Strait. We honor the cowboys past, present, and future whose courage, hard work, and sense of adventure keep the Western spirit alive. Long live Cowboys.”

In the video voice-over, Strait reads:
There’s a hundred years of history
and a hundred before that
All gathered in the thinkin’
Goin’ on beneath this hat.
And back behind his eyeballs
And pumpin’ through his veins
Is the ghost of every cowboy
That ever held the reins.
The cold flame burns within him
‘Til his skin’s as cold as ice
And the dues he paid to get here
Are worth every sacrifice.
All the miles spent sleepy drivin’
All the money down the drain,
All the “if I’s” and the “nearly’s”
All the bandages and pain.
All the female tears left dryin’,
All the fever and the fight
Are just a small down payment
On the ride he makes tonight.
It’s guts and love and glory,
One mortal’s chance at fame.
His legacy is rodeo
And cowboy is his name.
Fans are loving the ad, with one writing in the comments, “This 🥹🫶🏻 Love it.”
Another fan added, “Felt deeply within the heart you don’t have to be a real cowgirl to understand the desire in a cowboy’s heart😇💫, beautiful poem.”
Strait is a known rodeo fan. In fact, back on May 31, Strait delivered the eulogy for one of his “very best friends,” the legendary, eight-time world champion rodeo cowboy Roy “Super Looper” Cooper.
