Ethan Peck Makes Bold Comment About Spock’s Surprising New Relationship originally appeared on Parade.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds stars Ethan Peck and Christina Chong are opening up about their respective characters, Mr. Spock and Lt. La’an Noonien-Singh’s developing relationship in the show’s current third season.
During a July 2025 interview with Variety, alongside several of their Star Trek: SNW castmates at the 2025 San Diego Comic-Con, Peck and Chong said they were both surprised by Spock and La’an’s new connection.
“I was shocked. I was like, ‘What? They’re putting La’an and Spock together?'” said Chong.
She then said she believed her character would have continued to have an interest in James Kirk (Paul Wesley) after having a romance with a version of the character from an alternate reality in Season 2.
Peck said, however, he believed Spock and La’an share several similarities. For instance, La’an carries shame from being distantly related to villain Khan Noonien Singh. Meanwhile, Spock grabbles with being a half-Human raised on Vulcan.
“It makes a lot of sense on some level, because they are both sort of the most restrained [characters] and they are hiding a lot of shame and inner turmoil. So on paper it kind of makes sense,” said Peck.
He said, however, that the pairing “was still such a shock.”
Jess Bush, who plays Spock’s former romantic interest Nurse Christine Chapel, also discussed Spock and La’an’s new dynamic. Bush noted that Chapel has since moved on from Spock and is dating Dr. Roger Korby (Cillian O’Sullivan) in Season 3.
“I think the divergence of Chapel and Spock’s relationship, like the splitting of that, I think Chapel is pretty at peace with it,” said Bush while speaking to Variety. “I think that she knows that although you can really love someone, sometimes your paths do not align.”
Peck mentioned Spock getting closer to La’an during Star Trek: SNW Season 3 in a July 2025 interview with TV Insider. According to the actor, “La’an has some things to teach Spock.”
“I think a lot of Spock’s journey is learning about being human, and he does that through his relationships, as we all do. But, it is very important for him because he is half Vulcan and is learning to embrace his human side and the strengths of being human, So, yes, La’an does become one of his teachers in that way,” said Peck during the TV Insider interview.
