Tom Brady shared his opinion on golfer Scottie Scheffler’s recent comments about prioritizing family over his career
Brady questioned why family success and career success would be “mutually exclusive”
The father of three said he chose to teach his kids “what it takes” to be successful by being an example of hard work
Tom Brady and Scottie Schefller have differing views on prioritizing family and sport.
Brady, 47, wrote in his weekly newsletter on Tuesday, July 29 about recent comments made by Scheffler, 29, after the golfer said his success in the sport “is not a fulfilling life” without his wife Meredith and son Bennett.
“Scottie said he’d rather be a better father and husband than a good golfer,” Brady wrote in his newsletter, adding, “And my question is: why are those mutually exclusive?”
The former quarterback, whose marriage to supermodel Gisele Bündchen ended in 2022, shortly after he decided to un-retire and return for another season in the NFL, pondered, “Sure, they’re different blocks on the pyramid, but they’re part of the same pyramid. They’re connected!”
“For instance,” Brady continued, “I think part of being a great father is being a great example of doing what it takes to take care of your family. I chose to do it by playing football.”

Scheffler had talked about the split between his home life and golf life before winning the Open Championship in July. He said his success on the course is “fulfilling from the sense of accomplishment,” but “not fulfilling from a sense of the deepest places of your heart,” according to ESPN.
Scheffler added, “That’s why I talk about family being my priority, because it really is. I’m blessed to be able to come out here and play golf, but if my golf ever started affecting my home life or it ever affected the relationship I have with my wife or my son, that’s going to be the last day that I play out here for a living.”
In his newsletter Tuesday, Brady said his “dedication to the sport” of football, including “the hours of practice” and the times when he was “laser focused” on the field, were examples of “times when I believe I was doing the best possible thing for my family and my kids, by prioritizing my profession.”
Instead of choosing one or the other, Brady said he was teaching his children “by example” of “what it takes to be really good at your job, what it takes to follow through on commitments,” and how to be “a great teammate.”
“That work is a big part of all of our lives,” he added.

Brady also advised, “Remember, your children are watching everything, They see what you do in every aspect of your life and how you do it. Reading bedtime stories and helping them with homework are not the only ways to be a great parent.”
