Seattle’s Defensive Glue: Ernest Jones IV’s Impact Extends Far Beyond the Stat Sheet
SHARE

Ernest Jones IV has swiftly become the linchpin of the Seattle Seahawks’ defense, showcasing his multifaceted game with a pivotal interception against the Houston Texans. His consistent play and innate leadership have brought much-needed stability to a unit grappling with injuries, cementing his status as a fan favorite and a foundational piece for the team’s promising 2025 season.

The Seattle Seahawks’ Monday night 27-19 victory over the Houston Texans provided fans with plenty to cheer about, but perhaps no moment was more indicative of the team’s defensive evolution than Ernest Jones IV’s third-quarter interception. For those unfamiliar with the depth of his game, seeing the linebacker drop deep into coverage to pick off quarterback C.J. Stroud might have been a surprise.

Yet, for those within the Seahawks’ locker room and the growing legion of fans who have followed his journey, it was another testament to the stability and playmaking ability Jones brings. It was a moment that underscored exactly why he’s become such a critical asset.

The Unexpected Playmaker

The interception, which occurred on the Texans’ first drive of the third quarter, saw Jones slide in front of a pass intended for Houston’s leading receiver, Nico Collins. Reflecting on the play, Jones admitted it was a bit out of the ordinary for him, even if he often finds himself in deeper coverage.

“Usually when deeper routes develop, I’m holding down the middle of the field,” Jones said. “This one here caught me off guard a little bit. I didn’t see it until the last moment; just glad I was able to come down with it.” This humble take highlights his readiness to adapt and make impact plays when the opportunity arises.

A Pillar of Consistency and Leadership

Just seven games into the 2025 season, Jones has already achieved a new career high with three interceptions, showcasing his growth as a defensive threat. He is also the leading tackler for a Seahawks defense that entered the game against the Texans ranked second in rush defense and sixth in scoring defense, according to NFL.com’s official standings.

Since his acquisition from the Tennessee Titans last October, Jones has amassed 153 tackles and four interceptions over 17 games. This impactful tenure has certainly pleased coach Mike Macdonald, who recognized the defensive void Jones has filled.

Ernest Jones IV speaks to the media after the Seahawks’ win.

“You need someone in the middle of your defense to be an anchor, patrol the middle of the paint, make plays in the run and the pass game, and he’s doing that,” Macdonald stated. “Then you add his mentality, his toughness, and leadership, it’s made a difference for us.”

What truly distinguishes Jones in Macdonald’s eyes is his unwavering steadiness. Since his arrival, the Seahawks boast an impressive 11-6 record, including a strong 5-2 start in 2025. This consistency is invaluable, especially for a defense that has faced constant changes and been hampered by injuries. Teammate Leonard Williams III echoed this sentiment, calling Jones “pretty much the quarterback of the defense” for his ability to both calm and energize the unit.

Seahawks Unit Performance: What’s Working and What Needs Help

What’s Working

  • Elite Pass Rush: The Seahawks’ pass rush remains a dominant force, adding three more sacks against the Texans from Uchenna Nwosu, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Ty Okada. Lawrence, in particular, has been hot with three sacks in his last two games. Seattle is now tied for the third-most sacks (23) in the NFL.
  • Defensive Depth: A remarkable 12 Seahawks players have at least half a sack this season, with four defenders tallying at least three sacks, highlighting the collective effort.

What Needs Help

  • Special Teams Struggles: Kicker Jason Myers has had a challenging season, connecting on only 13 of 17 field goal attempts, with two blocked. Despite not missing an extra point in 2025, Myers has already missed as many field goals as he did in the entire 2024 season (26 for 30).

Stock Up

  • Revitalized Run Game: The much-criticized run game showed significant improvement against the Texans. Both Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet averaged over 3.9 yards per carry, combining for 115 yards. This marks their highest combined output since racking up 122 rushing yards against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on October 5.

Stock Down

  • Sam Darnold’s Accuracy: While generally stellar in his first season with the Seahawks, veteran quarterback Sam Darnold has struggled with accuracy over the past two weeks. Against the Texans, he completed a season-low 54.3% of his passes, marking consecutive games below 60%. He also threw an interception and fumbled in the endzone, leading to a Texans touchdown.

Looking Ahead: Injuries and Next Steps

The Seahawks are set to enter their bye week, offering a much-needed break for a team that has battled various injuries. Head coach Mike Macdonald anticipates the return of several key players for the first game after the bye.

  • Expected Returns: All-Pro cornerback Devon Witherspoon, linebacker Derick Hall, and safety Julian Love are all expected to be available.
  • Potential Activation: Fullback Robbie Ouzts could also be activated by next Sunday.

The team’s next challenge will be on November 2, when they visit Washington. With a strengthened defense anchored by Ernest Jones IV and key players returning from injury, the Seahawks are poised to make a strong push deeper into the 2025 season.
