A woman who got married a few years ago recounted on Reddit the “annoying” time one of her wedding guests claimed that her outfit would “upstage” her. The former bride was “amused and confused” by the dress because it was a “monstrosity”

Even years after her wedding, a woman still can’t get over one wedding guest’s desire to “upstage” her.
The bride detailed a “strange, annoying” exchange she had with a former female friend in a post on Reddit’s “Wedding Drama” forum. The “oddball moment” was over the guest’s wedding attire — which she suggested would “outshine” the bride.
“I damn near fell out of my chair laughing. I thought she was joking!!!” the bride said of when she saw a photo of the “allegedly amazing dress” her ex-friend was planning on wearing.

Because the wedding took place on Halloween, the bride and groom encouraged guests to dress according to theme or wear black. “I didn’t care if they wore a black ball gown or black jeans, it was their choice and I just wanted them to be comfy and have fun,” the bride explained.

The bride’s former friend sent her a text asking for outfit approval because she was afraid her “vintage number” might “upstage” her. The bride had already been having “issues” with this woman, but figured she could “tolerate” her for just one day because her husband was a groomsman. Even though she was shocked by the woman’s insinuation that she’d look better than her, she “eagerly awaited” the picture of what she “envisioned to be some otherworldly” dress.
“I was both amused and confused,” the Redditor remembered.
She continued, “It was a faded, black, baggy-looking belted ’70s dress. It looked like someone took a Matrix-meets-bag-lady-knockoff out of the trash, poured dust on it, washed it in pee, and voila!”
The bride was bewildered that this dress was not only supposed to knock her socks off, but also “upstage” her.
“[What] did she think I was going to wear to my own wedding? A burlap sack?” the bride questioned.
Because the guest was “super skinny” compared to the “super curvy” bride, the Redditor concluded that her ex-friend must be so “self-absorbed” and “self-centered” that she thought she’d “outshine” her “no matter what she wore.
“She has made underhanded remarks about my figure as well as rude remarks about people who are more curvaceous or full-figured,” the bride noted.

The bride approved “the monstrosity,” but the guest was a no-show to the wedding due to “anxiety.”
“But honestly, I think it was because she didn’t get the reaction she wanted from me, and she realized she wasn’t going to be the center of attention, so she stayed home,” the bride said, adding that “a few months later” she “stopped all contact with her.”

Reddit users in the comments section found the ordeal to be hilarious. They called the wedding guest “delusional” and “shallow” for thinking all eyes would be on her instead of the couple getting married.
“I dare say that’s not self-confidence, it’s severe insecurities,” one person commented, with another adding, “Literally no one cares what guests wear to a wedding unless it’s wildly inappropriate.”
