Rapper Doechii wore Louis Vuitton for her debut at fashion’s biggest night
The theme of the 2025 Met Gala is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” and the dress code is “Tailored for You”
This is Doechii’s Met Gala debut
Doechii has no “anxiety” when it comes to the 2025 Met Gala.
Before hitting her first red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday, May 5, the Grammy-winning rapper did her best to keep her debut look a secret (as seen in a video shared by WWD) and boy, did her unveiling deliver.
The “Denial is a River” artist, 26, rounded out a breakthrough year looking confident in a Louis Vuitton suit that she collaborated on with Pharrell Williams, who is not only the label’s men’s creative director but also one of the evening’s co-chairs.
While chatting with Vogue on the carpet, she said she was heavily inspired by guest curator Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, which was also used as reference for Andrew Bolton when curating the “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” exhibit.

Doechii’s ensemble featured checkered shorts that hit just above her knee and a cropped monogrammed blazer. She wore a white button-up shirt underneath, accessorized with a maroon bow tie that matched her calf-length socks and Mary Jane shoes. Her hair was styled in an afro.
Earlier in the weekend, Doechii paid homage to André Leon Talley, the late fashion journalist who also inspired this year’s theme.

In October 2024, Vogue announced Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams and Anna Wintour as co-chairs of the 2025 Met Gala, as well as LeBron James as honorary chair. The event, which is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, is a fundraiser for The Costume Institute and spotlights the museum’s spring 2025 exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, which is the theme for the gala.
The exhibit “presents a cultural and historical examination of Black style from the 18th century to the present through an exploration of the concept of dandyism,” according to a post on the museum’s Instagram.
The Met Gala’s dress code — which is slightly different from the theme — is “Tailored for You.” It is a nod to the exhibition’s focus on menswear and suiting. Alongside Doechii for the host committee, Simone Biles and her husband, Jonathan Owens, Regina King, Spike Lee, Angel Reese and Usher, will be at the helm.

This is the “What It Is” rapper’s first appearance at the Met Gala, which comes after a “breakthrough” year for the star who clinched her first Grammy for best rap album for Alligator Bites Never Heal at the 67th Grammys in February and took home the outstanding music artist award at the 36th GLAAD Media Awards a month later.
At both events, the musician notably brought her A-game with interesting silhouettes and layers. At the Grammys, she notably channeled an office siren in two Thom Browne looks — a pinstripe, off-the-shoulder corset dress and a two-piece corset and dramatic skirt set.
For her first look of the night, she wore a custom, wool gown that featured a structured silhouette exaggerated at the rapper’s hips. The gown was teamed with a matching pinstripe tie and classic white button-down with the luxury brand’s signature triple-stripe armband detail in red, white and blue. She rounded out the red-carpet look with cool-toned eye makeup, an intricate braided hairstyle down her back and sparkling drop earrings.
For her second look, she wore oversized, skirt-like gray pants with a dramatically exaggerated hip silhouette on top of another gray tie and white shirt. She layered a dark gray corset and cropped, short-sleeve suit jacket on top and changed up her hair by wearing it in a wore her braids in a gravity-defying geometric style.

For the GLAAD Media Awards red carpet, she opted for more of a grunge (and campy) style, donning a yellow silk corseted blouse with a peplum bottom, which she paired with a black skirt with white stitches visible along the top and bottom.
She paired the look with white split-toe white shoes with black straps, a pair of glasses and a white tape measure, which she wore around her neck like a scarf. As for glam, she wore a dark brown and nude glossy lip with dark red blush, mascara, and black eyeliner.
Earlier this year, the “What It Is” musician opened up in a video interview with Vogue France about how she’s evolved with her glam and style as she attends more award shows and events.
“I used to really hate glam because I didn’t like sitting still for a long time,” said Doechii. “But I have grown to love it because its a space for me to be still with myself, be present with the people around me, but also be creative. And I kinda get to reset and recenter myself, and I’ve discovered that through makeup and hair and fashion.”
