New details have come to light regarding the tragic death of Malcolm-Jamal Warner.
The longtime actor, best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, died in an accidental drowning in Costa Rica on Sunday, July 20. He was 54 years old.
It had previously been revealed that Warner was on a family vacation, but now, it has been reported that the iconic star was swimming with his 8-year-old daughter at the time, a saddening detail of his untimely passing.
According to local police, the young girl and her father were both caught up in a rip current off the coast of Playa Cocles in Limón, per ABC News. Surfers nearby rushed in to aid the duo and were able to save Warner’s daughter—whose identity has remained private—however, despite 45 minutes of CPR, The Resident star could not be revived.

Though the iconic actor and his wife—whose identity is also private—had been notoriously nonpublic with the details of their family, Warner had expressed love for his daughter plenty of times in the past.
“You have absolutely no idea. A love so profound that even a poet can’t find the words to describe it,” he once wrote of his only child. “Often I find myself just staring at her and wondering where she came from… I am proud that we have been able to provide a wonderful, loving, and spiritually enriching environment as a home base into which ALL babies should be born and thrive.”
The Forensic Pathology Department in Costa Rica confirmed the Malcolm & Eddie star’s cause of death as asphyxiation by submersion.
