Jillian Bell’s raunchy directorial debut is supplying the laughs this summer.
PEOPLE is exclusively debuting the trailer for Summer of 69, which stars Saturday Night Live‘s Chloe Fineman as an exotic dancer hired by high-school senior Abby (Sam Morelos) to help Abby learn how to seduce her longtime crush Max before graduation.
Bell, who most recently appeared in Amy Schumer’s Kinda Pregnant, co-wrote and directs the movie.
As the trailer shows, Abby considers herself hopelessly inexperienced with romance, dating and sex, then her school’s St. Bernard mascot informs her Max has a thing for a certain sex position (see: the movie’s title).
Abby then happens upon a strip club in her hometown, and she recruits Fineman’s dancer Santa Monica, who is enthusiastic about taking on the mentorship role.
Matt Cornett, Nicole Byer, Liza Koshy, Natalie Morales, Alex Moffat, Fernando Carsa, Paula Pell and Charlie Day also star in the comedy, with Day hilariously referring to Abby as “Magic Mike’s awkward niece” after she herself appears onstage at the club.

Bell tells PEOPLE she was inspired by late director John Hughes, known for teen classics like The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles.
“I approached Summer of 69 with the same sense of nostalgia, character-driven laughs and a lot of unexpected warmth. I also wanted to explore a coming-of-age story for two women of different ages,” she says.
Of the cast, Bell says “every single person” had her “laughing or crying from their brilliant and effortless performances daily.” She adds, “We shot in the summer in Syracuse, and it felt like the most fun summer camp of our lives. When we weren’t shooting together, we were barbecuing, playing Mafia or taking a pontoon out on the lake.”

Bell produced the movie alongside her sister Breanna and says she “pulled a lot from our relationship growing up” as inspiration for the movie.
“She was always my go-to for all things sex-related, puberty-related, and all other subjects that make you feel like a weirdo when you’re a young woman and your body is changing,” Bell says. “In a lot of ways, it is my love letter to her and to all the mentors who help us feel less alone on our journey to becoming adults.”

According to Bell, the world “needs more comedies right now.”
“We need more comfort films, and we need more stories about young women openly talking about sex. I wish this movie had been around when I was younger,” she says. “I would have watched it with my girlfriends on repeat.”

“People should check it out if they’re looking to have a good time, laugh and relate in a way they may have never thought they would to a movie essentially about 69-ing,” Bell jokes.
“We’ve got a great ensemble cast, exciting musical numbers, fantasy sequences, strip clubs, parties and an all-knowing St. Bernard mascot. Tune in.”
Summer of 69 is on Hulu May 9.
