Capitals’ Ethen Frank ignites third-period tsunami to stun Canadiens, keep Metro playoff heat on

Washington’s depth line delivered a season-saving statement, erasing a two-goal deficit in the final 20 minutes to steal a 3-2 OT win over Montreal and keep the Metro playoff picture tilted in the Caps’ favor.

Why this rally matters more than the box score

The Washington Capitals entered Tuesday stuck in neutral: no Tom Wilson for a fifth straight game, an 0-5 shootout record, and boos raining down after a lifeless second-period power play. Two goals down at second intermission, they stared at a fourth loss in five outings and a possible tumble out of the Eastern Conference playoff cutline.

Instead, Ethen Frank—a 27-year-old depth forward who began the year on the bubble—authored the league’s freshest comeback script. His tip of Matt Roy’s point shot at 7:03 of the third cut the deficit to 2-1. With 1:54 left and goalie Charlie Lindgren on the bench, Frank knifed a second redirect through traffic to square the game. Connor McMichael finished the story 59 seconds into overtime, stuffing a rebound past Samuel Montembeault for a 3-2 victory that vaults Washington into sole possession of third place in the Metropolitan Division.

Inside the numbers: 15-5 and 10-1

The shot clock tells the tale. The Caps outshot Montreal 15-5 in the third and 10-1 in overtime, a 25-6 avalanche over 22:59 of game time. That dominance came without Wilson, without any production from the top line at even strength, and after the Canadiens had killed 24 of their previous 25 penalties.

Frank’s second tally forced overtime and capped his first two-goal NHL game.

Frank’s chaotic ride: 10 goals, 8 assists and a locker-room microphone

Twelve months ago Frank was a Hershey Bears call-up hoping for a fourth-line cameo. On Tuesday he skated between Alex Ovechkin and Dylan Strome during the game-tying sequence and now owns 10 goals and 8 assists in 42 games—top-five among Washington forwards in goals per 60 minutes at 5-on-5.

“It’s been quite a ride,” Frank said, still dripping sweat. “I don’t even know if I could find the words to describe it. It’s been pretty chaotic. It’s been a lot of fun for sure.”

Carbery’s culture test: passed

Second-year coach Spencer Carbery has preached resilience since training camp. His bench reacted to the second-period jeers by cranking the forecheck, shortening the bench, and trusting Roy—normally a stay-at-home defender—to activate down the wall and create Frank’s first tip-in.

Montembeault faced 40 shots but couldn’t survive the 25-shot third-period plus overtime barrage.

“We showed a ton of character and fight in that third period,” Carbery said. “As a group we’re working through trying to find ourselves through this stretch with some injuries, battling through some things, missing some key guys.”

Metro math: Caps now two points clear of Philly, Pens

The victory lifts Washington to 54 points, two ahead of both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh with three games in hand on the Flyers. The Caps also remain tied for fourth in the NHL with 21 regulation wins, the first tiebreaker that could decide seeding if their shootout misery continues.

What’s next: a possible launch point

Washington has banked points in nine of its last 11 home dates and faces a softer January slate: San Jose, Chicago, Ottawa and a reeling Toronto before the All-Star break. If Wilson returns and Frank keeps providing secondary scoring, Tuesday’s comeback could be remembered as the night the Caps stabilized their season.

As McMichael put it, “A night like tonight usually kick-starts a team into something special. The race in the East is so tight. Every point is huge.”
