Brian Austin Green reveals how ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’’s summer rerun strategy turned the cast into teen idols overnight — a phenomenon that reshaped pop culture and made them feel like rock stars.

When Brian Austin Green, then 18, first realized he was a teen idol, it wasn’t during the show’s premiere on October 4, 1990, or even during its initial 13-episode run. It happened nine months later — in the summer of 1991 — when the show’s producers pulled off a masterstroke: airing brand-new episodes during the summer months, while most other shows were in reruns.

During a recent appearance on the Inside of You With Michael Rosenbaum podcast, Green, now 52, described the seismic shift. “The first 13 episodes, nobody watched… and then all of a sudden, the summer episodes, they started. They came up with this brilliant idea of doing these summer episodes. So when all the other shows went into reruns, we had new original shows. So when kids were out of school, they had something to watch that was brand new,” he recalled.

“Everything changed within like a week and a half, two weeks,” Green added. The transformation was immediate and visceral. “We would do a mall appearance, and there would be like tens of thousands of people in the mall, and they would have to sneak us out in like laundry carts and weird s—,” he said. “No success I’ve ever had in my life compares to that. It was lightning in a bottle.”

The cast — including Jason Priestley, Shannen Doherty, Luke Perry, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Tori Spelling, and Gabrielle Carteris — became cultural icons overnight. Their rise wasn’t accidental. It was the result of a strategic decision by producer Aaron Spelling and FOX executives who, after the show’s initial flop, decided to keep it alive — not for its artistic merit, but because they had no other options. “They picked us up for the back nine,” Green said. “But Aaron Spelling had this truly genius idea to do these summer episodes. So, when all the other shows went into reruns and kids were on summer break, our show was still airing original episodes. Overnight, the show went from nobody watching to everybody watching.”

Green’s memory of that summer is vivid. “I clearly remember being at a gas station, and there was a carload of young girls whose parents were filling up the car. The girls were like, ‘Oh my God, are you on that show?’ And I was thinking, ‘Holy s—, you’ve seen the show?!’”

It wasn’t just the ratings that soared. The cultural impact was undeniable. The cast’s appearance at Disneyland’s Grad Night — an after-hours, all-night event for graduating high school seniors — became a frenzy. Fans went “bonkers” for the stars, and mall appearances drew “thousands” of screaming fans. “It felt like we were part of New Kids on the Block,” Green said.

‘Beverly Hills, 90210’’s initial reception was brutal. It premiered opposite NBC’s Cheers and was met with lukewarm reviews. FOX’s decision to keep it on the air was purely logistical — they had no other show to replace it. But Spelling’s summer rerun strategy turned a near-catastrophe into a cultural phenomenon. The show’s success wasn’t just about the characters or the story — it was about timing, marketing, and a willingness to adapt.

Green’s recollection of that summer is not just nostalgia — it’s a masterclass in how a show can go from obscurity to dominance in a matter of weeks. “The genius wasn’t in the script or the acting — it was in the scheduling,” he said. “We were the only show airing new episodes while everyone else was stuck with reruns. That’s what made us the stars of summer.”

For fans, the legacy of ‘90210’ is more than nostalgia — it’s a blueprint for how to turn a struggling show into a cultural juggernaut. Green’s story is not just about fame — it’s about the power of innovation, timing, and the willingness to take risks. “That summer changed everything,” he said. “It wasn’t just about being on TV — it was about being seen. And being seen by millions of kids who suddenly had a new hero to look up to.”

Today, as the cast reunites for events and new projects, the story of their rise remains a testament to the power of strategic thinking. “It was the most iconic moment of my career,” Green said. “And it’s still the most unforgettable.”

For fans who grew up watching ‘90210’, Green’s story is a reminder of how a single decision — a summer rerun — can change the trajectory of a show and a generation. “That’s what makes this story so special,” he said. “It’s not just about the show — it’s about the moment. And that moment changed everything.”
