When Beyond the Gates premiered, it quickly became apparent that Martin Richardson, played by Brandon Claybon, had a secret. Now months later, the actor teases fans that their guesses are nowhere close to what’s really going on.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the actor posted “So many theories….and you still have no idea. #beyondthegates 😊” to which head-writer and show runner Michele Val Jean replied, “Truth!”

Fans tried to get the actor to give a hint, but Claybon simply responded in a jokingly manner.

Since the show premiered fans have watched Martin have reoccurring nightmares related to an event in his past. While viewers have not been let in on what the event was, they do know that Bill (Timon Kyle Durrett) knows what the secret is. They also know that it is something large enough that Bill is able to blackmail Vernon (Clifton Davis) and Anita (Tamara Tunie) to do as he says. As Bill let it be known if he reveals what Martin did it would destroy his political career.
CBS officially describes Beyond the Gates as a soap opera that is “set in a leafy Maryland suburb just outside of Washington, D.C., in one the most affluent African American counties in the United States; a posh gated community with winding tree-lined streets and luxurious mansions to call home. At the center of this community are the Duprees, a powerful and prestigious multi-generational family that is the very definition of Black royalty. But behind these pristine walls and lush, manicured gardens are juicy secrets and scandals waiting to be uncovered. And those who live outside these gates are watching closely. These are the places where our characters live, love, work and play. Those who have “made it” and those who haven’t are all trying to navigate life … and some with more grace than others.“
Beyond The Gates, developed and produced by CBS Studios / NAACP venture in partnership with P&G Studios, a division of Procter and Gamble, is the ground-breaking first hour long black soap opera to premiere in daytime. The creation is the brainchild of award-winning showrunner Michele Val Jean and Sheila Ducksworth, and the first new soap opera to premiere since NBC debuted Passions back in 1999.
Beyond the Gates was renewed for a second season, confirming that the series will run throughout 2026.
Beyond the Gates airs weekdays on CBS at 2 p.m. ET, and streams weekdays on Paramount+.
