Brad Pitt got candid about his experience attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in a recent appearance on Dax Shephard’s podcast.
While the Fight Club star said that he felt a little “shy” when he first came into the meeting, he said that he had been “assured by a friend” that the meeting he was attending was a “safe place.”
“I’m generally a bit shy in any situation at first,” Pitt said during the “Armchair Expert” episode on June 23. “But I don’t know, I just remember getting my arms around it pretty quickly and it became a thing for me. It was really like something I’d look forward to.”
Pitt also explained that the fact that he was feeling so low at the time was something that helped him be vulnerable in the meetings.

“I was pretty much on my knees, and I was really open,” the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood actor continued. “I was trying anything and everyone. Anything anyone threw at me. It was a difficult time. I needed rebooting. I needed to wake the f–k up in some areas. And it just meant a lot to me. I just thought it was just incredible men sharing their experiences, their foibles, their missteps, their wants, their aches, and a lot of humor with it. I thought it was a really special experience.”
Pitt has spoken about his time in AA in the past, and in 2019 he revealed that he first entered the program after his ex-wife, Angelina Jolie, filed for divorce in 2016.
“I had taken things as far as I could take it, so I removed my drinking privileges,” the Legends of the Fall star told the New York Times. “You had all these men sitting around being open and honest in a way I have never heard. It was this safe space where there was little judgment, and therefore little judgment of yourself.”
